Best Money Pitchers in Baseball (Updated 4/10/13)
Betting on the best teams in the majors isn’t always the best way to go about betting on baseball. Sometimes, it’s just as profitable to find a few great starting pitchers and back them on the MLB betting lines instead. Today here at Bang the Book, we are going to be look at some of the starting pitchers that have been throwing well and how much they have been helping boost your bankroll thus far this season!
There are 21 pitchers that are 2-0 for their squads thus far this year, and only 10 of those pitchers have successfully reached 2-0 by beating an underdog in at least one of those games. The top dog of the bunch is Justin Masterson (2-0, +$341) of the Cleveland Indians. The Tribe have had all sorts of problems pitching this year, especially in the back end of their rotation, but Masterson and the one run that he has allowed over the course of his first 13 innings of work on the campaign is most certainly exempt from that. More impressively is that Masterson has won both of his games on the road against two of the AL East contenders, and his seven frames of shutout ball against the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday was one of the more impressive displays that we have seen all season long.
There isn’t another man that really even comes close to what Masterson has done this season. In fact, the only other man that has won both of his starts this season as an underdog is one of Masterson’s former teammates, Jon Lester (2-0, +$212). Lester also went on the road and won twice this season against AL East foes, but he has gotten a lot of help along the way as well. The Boston Red Sox have put 21 runs up in two games to help Lester out, though the southpaw’s two runs allowed in 12 innings has certainly helped out as well. Lester’s teammate, Clay Buchholz (2-0, +$210) is right behind him in the chase for the best money pitchers in baseball. These two men rank No. 2 and No. 3 in the American League this season behind Masterson in terms of profits.
Over in the National League, things are a bit tougher. We’re glad to see Cliff Lee (2-0, +$213) find his way back into form after last season’s disastrous outing. It’s good too, to see that Tim Lincecum (2-0, +$218) has guided his team to two victories this season. We have to be careful with “The Freak,” though. He allowed six runs in six innings but was bailed out by his offense against the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday in his most recent start.
The men that are No. 2 and No. 3 respectively on the list of the top MLB pitchers in the game are the Chicago Cubs’ Travis Wood (2-0, +$232) and the Pittsburgh Pirates’ Wandy Rodriguez (2-0, +$230). We gloss right over both of these men for the moment, as we really don’t believe that they have the abilities to stay up here in even the Top 20 in terms of profits this season.
There are 11 pitchers that are 2-0 and +$200, having won a pair of games as favorites this season. Amongst the notables include Tim Hudson, Gio Gonzalez, and Andy Pettitte. Yu Darvish is 2-0, and his outing against the Houston Astros in which he was one out away from a perfect game was one of the most impressive starts of the year. However, likely the top pitcher through two starts this season has been Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers. You always have to pay a premium price to bet Kershaw, who has been -148 and -195 in his two starts, but he has come to the table dealing this year. The lefty has thrown 16 innings of work and has allowed just six hits and one walk, striking out 16 without allowing a run. The best part? He has only gotten a total of five runs of support in two games, and there was really never a doubt that he was winning either of those games.
