Best Money Pitchers in Baseball (Updated 5/28/13)
We’re officially past the quarter pole of the season, and the All-Star Break will be here before you know it! This is an article you’re definitely going to want to read, as it will go over all of the best money pitchers on the MLB odds this season.
There is clearly a king of pitching right now for MLB betting fans, and it is a huge shock that the man of the hour that has put up a perfect 10-0 record for his team is Patrick Corbin of the Arizona Diamondbacks. Every other week when we address this article, we marvel at the fact that Corbin remains unbeaten this year. Personally, he is 8-0 with a 1.71 ERA, and there is no doubt that he is one of the top starters in the game. He has 56 strikeouts in 68.1 innings, he rarely leaves games early, and he even just threw a complete game against the Colorado Rockies two starts ago. The southpaw is just getting better with time, and he has been stunningly good this year. Corbin has been responsible for $1,065 of profits this year, over $300 more than any other pitcher in the game.
The only other pitcher in the game that has made more than four starts that still hasn’t led his team to a loss this season is Jeanmar Gomez for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Gomez though, clearly has been more lucky than good. He hasn’t pitched more than five innings in any of his starts this year, and he isn’t going to stay in the rotation either in all likelihood when the Bucs are healthy. Still, there’s no denying the +$761 mark for the season, the seventh best money mark in baseball.
There are nine pitchers in total that have netted at least $600 in profits this season by themselves, and Gomez isn’t even the only Pirate on the list. Wandy Rodriguez has had a fantastic season, one in which he has truly resurrected himself. The lefty has led his team to an 8-2 record, and he has won four straight starts that he has made for the surging Pirates. Rodriguez has the second best money mark in the National League at +$661, but as you can see, that’s a far cry from where Corbin sits for the Diamondbacks.
Most of the rest of the pitchers on this list in fact, are American League arms. The race to be the best of the bunch is very close between Matt Moore, Clay Buchholz, and Jason Hammel, who are +$741, +$730, and +$718 respectively.
Moore clearly has the best arm of the bunch, and the argument could be made that he should be starting the All-Star Game for the American League. The lefty has really picked up the slack for where LHP David Price has left off this year, and he has a perfect 8-0 record with a 2.21 ERA that just seems to be getting better with every single start that he makes. He did however, guide his team to its first loss of the season with him on the mound, though RHP Fernando Rodney was the man to clearly blame after he blew the save in the ninth inning against the New York Yankees.
Buchholz is worth watching right now. He missed his last start with a collarbone injury, and he could be hampered just a bit going forward. The righty very well could be put on the 15-day DL this week if he doesn’t look like he will make his next start.
Hammel is a joke. He is 7-2, but he has a 4.98 ERA. Even when he was beaten by the Rays on May 17th, his team gave him 10 runs of support. The Baltimore Orioles have now plated at least six runs in eight straight starts that Hammel has made, and we think that we could manage just fine if we had that type of support on our side.
Both Hisashi Iwakuma and Justin Masterson have 8-3 records for their teams this year, and they have nearly identical money marks as well at +$621 and +$607 respectively.
Over in the National League, the man of the hour is Jonathan Pettibone. Pettibone is just a rookie, and he is playing on a team that frankly isn’t all that special. However, he is personally 3-0 with a 3.21 ERA, and that has been more than good enough to guide this team to a 6-1 record, netting +$631 in profits.
