#2 Orlando Magic
#4 Boston Celtics
Boston Leads Series 3-2
For a series that many predicted would be over four days ago, the Orlando Magic and the Boston Celtics are still battling it out, as they will engage in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference Finals at TD Banknorth Garden on Friday night. The Magic survived elimination for a second time on Wednesday, as they knocked off the C’s 113-92, and are just two steps away from becoming the first team in NBA history to come back from a 3-0 series deficit to win.
The Magic have their swagger back, and that’s bad news for the Celtics and for whomever could be facing them in the NBA Finals. C Dwight Howard didn’t put up fantastic numbers by his standards, as he picked up 21 points and ten boards in Game 5, but he is starting to look a lot like a prized fighter in the paint, as he is hungry and taking his game right to the Celtics and dishing out punishment, ala Shaquille O’Neal back in the day for the Magic Men. G Jameer Nelson has proved to be an inspirational leader for the team as well. Not only is he the man that is leading the rallying cry in the city of Orlando that this comeback is possible, but he is also putting his money where his mouth is, having scored 23 and 24 points in Games 4 and 5 of this series to help out the Magic.
The Celtics have become bloodied, bruised, and frustrated… Literally. C Kendrick Perkins was tossed out of Game 5 with a pair of technical fouls, and now he faces the prospects of being suspended for the sixth game in this series due to the fact that he has now amassed seven ‘T’s in the playoffs. His only reprise would be if the NBA repealed one of those technicals, which would allow him to start. F Glen Davis, who spent a boat load of time trying to defend Howard in the post, took an elbow right to the jaw, and as a result, lost a tooth and suffered a concussion. His status is up in the air for Game 6 as well. F Rasheed Wallace led all Boston scorers with 21 points on Wednesday, but his ailing back is causing him issues again. He, too could be inactive for HC Doc Rivers on Friday.
The Celtics have to think that this is their Game 7 on Friday night. Winning a seventh game in Orlando having lost three straight is going to be quite the dubious task. Many are going to hop on the Magic bandwagon in a hurry, but we tend to believe that this series is ending on Friday night. Boston has the goods, with or without anyone in the post, to shoot it out with Orlando, and if that’s what it comes down to, we’ll take our chances with F Paul Pierce and G Ray Allen to make the Magic disappear.
