NBA Pointspread: Spurs -11
San Antonio took care of business in Game One at the AT&T Center. The Spurs jumped out to an early lead and coasted to a 106-91 win over the Jazz. Utah really can’t afford to fall down 2-0 against the most consistent team in the NBA. Can the Jazz put up a big effort and even this series or will the Spurs take control?
Utah scrapped their way into the playoffs with a strong finish over the final few weeks. The Jazz finished 25-8 at home, but they were just 11-23 on the road. In order to go anywhere in the playoffs, this team is going to have to find a way to win some big games on the road. The strength of this Utah team is their frontcourt. Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap combine to average 36 points and 19 rebounds per contest. Derrick Favors is also capable of piling up the points and rebounds down low.
Gordon Hayward has really improved in his second season in the NBA. Hayward averaged 12 points per game in the regular season, and he scored 17 in Game One. Utah must be better on the defensive end. The Spurs shot 48% from the floor in their win Sunday. The first goal for the Jazz defense needs to be finding a way to slow down Tony Parker.
San Antonio Spurs
Tony Parker shredded the Utah defense for 28 points and 8 assists in Game One. Parker’s penetration really opened up the floor for everyone else. Matt Bonner made three from beyond the arc, and Stephen Jackson scored 14 points in Sunday’s win. Tim Duncan turned the intensity up a notch, and he finished with 17 points and 11 boards. This is a veteran Spurs team that has been concerned with staying fresh all year, but these veterans are going to be giving 100% throughout the playoffs. It has to be encouraging for the Spurs that they won so comfortably despite Manu Ginobili having an off game in the series opener.
The biggest strength of this year’s Spurs team is their ability to score from so many different positions as well as their overall team depth. This is a team that literally goes 11 or 12 deep, and everyone has a specific role that they fill very well. As a team the Spurs shoot 39.3% from three-point range, which is easily the best mark in the NBA. Greg Popovich was named NBA Coach of the Year for the work he has done with this team this season.
The Spurs are 9-0 ATS in their last 9 games as a home favorite of 11 points or greater. Overall, the Spurs are 21-5-2 ATS in their last 27 games as a home favorite.
The over is 11-3 in the last 14 meetings between these two teams in San Antonio. The over is 12-5 in the Spurs last 17 games overall.
The Jazz are just 7-18-1 ATS in their last 26 games at San Antonio.
Free NBA Pick: Spurs -11
The Spurs are the better team, and I don’t expect them to take the foot off the gas here. Look for another impressive effort from the Spurs.
