At Bang the Book.com on a weekly basis we examine the NBA and expose some thought-provoking betting angles that can benefit the handicapper. Any handicapper that makes money betting on basketball knows that research is the key to picking winners on a regular basis. We realize that time is not always easy to find so we do the work for you and find the best angles to bet on in this upcoming week.
Here is a betting angle that comes into play this week and should be used by every serious NBA handicapper.
One of the angles that are often overlooked in basketball, but takes center stage in other sports like baseball, is the streak. The streak in the NBA is very interesting to handicap. The savvy basketball handicapper than can identify a streak early can make some money, but they also have to know when to stop betting on the streak.
There is a perfect example happening in the NBA right now. The Oklahoma City Thunder has the best record in the NBA and arguably the best player in the game in Kevin Durant. Durant is on an MVP pace and is on stride to set a new record for scoring in the league. Durant scored at least 30 points for the 12th straight game, matching the league’s longest such streak since Tracy McGrady did it in 14 consecutive outings in the 2002-03 season. During that streak, the Thunder has put together a nine game winning streak.
How does that affect basketball betting?
The Thunder has been a cash cow this season on the court and have a 28-19 against the spread (ATS) betting record. Look for that to change. A NBA team that is on a winning streak can be a good team to bet on early in the streak (the first 3-5 games) but once they get into the main stream media and the streak starts to get extra attention it becomes a time to fade the team. The Thunder is in this spot now.
The Thunder should be a fade in the next three games against the Nets, Wizards and Grizzlies. The odds makers are starting to inflate the Thunder as a favorite because the public is starting to bet on them. That overvalued line will give the underdogs the edge in these upcoming games.
Other teams like the Knicks, Suns and Grizzlies are on modest four game winning streaks and they should be teams that basketball bettors want to bet on right now, but the Thunder should be avoided at all costs.
