NCAA Basketball Pick: Memphis vs. Marshall Conference USA Tournament Preview
The Conference USA automatic bid will be handed out on Saturday morning to start a huge day of college basketball betting action, as the Marshall Thundering Herd look for the upset over the Memphis Tigers.
Matters for the Tigers are great right now. They are the one team in Conference USA that can absolutely say that they are in the NCAA Tournament, and they are probably going to claim yet another C-USA title on Saturday. Memphis had absolutely no issues taking care of the UCF Knights on Friday night in the semifinals, posting a very impressive 83-52 victory that was never really in doubt. The team is now averaging 75.1 points per game this year, and it is shooting 49.2 percent from the field as a team, ranking No. 5 in the land. This isn’t as deep of a team as the Tigers normally have, but on Friday, six players had at least eight points. Keep an eye on Wesley Witherspoon off of the bench, as he has been a huge catalyst this season in that role and should be able to do the same again on Saturday after the short turnaround time. The Tigers have now won six in a row and have covered all six games, and that is why they are trying to move up, possibly as high as the No. 5 line on the bracket with a win in this one.
The Thundering Herd could be in the NCAA Tournament right now, but they would be a heck of a lot better served stealing Conference USA’s automatic bid instead of leaving their fate up to the Selection Committee. Marshall’s win over the Southern Miss Golden Eagles on Friday was clearly the team’s biggest win of the season, and the argument could be made that two wins over SMS in the last weeks and change should give the Herd the nod over the Golden Eagles. However, their two resumes just don’t add up. Damier Pitts had a huge outing on Friday, coming up with 24 points and five boards. Dennis Tinnon had a big time game as well, putting up 10 points and 13 boards for a double-double. The problem that Marshall might have in this short turnaround is a lack of depth. Three of the five starters played at least 36 minutes in the win over Southern Miss, and there were only two players that came off of the bench for more than three mintues.
The Final Word: Marshall might be able to hang in this one, though. The Herd looked great against Southern Miss for the mass majority of the game, and though we do think that the Tigers are going to be the conference champs, they aren’t going to be able to cover what will inevitably be a huge number to cover.
