NCAA Football Betting Previews – Alabama Crimson Tide vs Auburn Tigers
Point spread by VietBet: Alabama -21
The Alabama Crimson Tide will try and cement a spot in the BCS title game this Saturday afternoon when they clash with their bitter in-state rival, the Auburn Tigers in the annual Iron Bowl at Jordan-Hare Stadium. The game is slated to get underway at 3:30 p.m. (ET) and it will be broadcast nationally on CBS.
Alabama finds itself back in the driver seat for a shot at a national championship after moving into the No.2 spot in the latest BCS rankings. Last Saturday’s 45-21 glorified scrimmage against Division IAA Georgia Southern in a game that had no posted line, raised its record to 10-1 straight-up (7-3 against the spread) on the year. It is 4-0 SU (3-1 ATS) on the road this season and the total has stayed ‘under’ in six of their 10 games overall.
The formula has stayed the same for the Crimson Tide all season long; a bruising ground game coupled with a smothering defense that is ranked first in the nation in points allowed. Through 11 games, they have averaged 220.5 yards a game rushing and held their opponents to just 8.4 points a game.
Auburn took a breather last Saturday as well, with a 35-16 victory over D-IAA Samford as a 31.5-point home favorite. It is now 7-4 SU, but has only covered the spread in four games this year. The total has gone 5-6 in the 11 games.
The Tigers also sport a potent rushing offense that is averaging 183.5 yards a game, but their defense has struggled to keep opponents out of the end zone all year long. It has given-up an average of 28.2 points a game, which could be a major problem against an Alabama team that is averaging 35.5.
The Tide are 5-2 ATS in their last seven conference games and 8-3 ATS in their last 11 games as favorites. The total has stayed ‘under’ in four of their last five games overall.
The Tigers are 10-3 ATS in their last 13 games against the SEC and a perfect 6-0 ATS in their last six games as home underdogs. The total has stayed ‘under’ in six of their last eight games overall.
Alabama is just 1-5 ATS in the last six Iron Bowls. The home team in this rivalry is 5-2 in the last seven games and the total has stayed ‘under’ in four of the last five. With such a large disparity of talent between the two teams this season you can severely discount the past trends in this matchup. Look for the Tide to take full advantage by rolling over rivals in lopsided romp.
The Pick: Alabama 35 Auburn 7
