The MWC season kicks off for the final time for the TCU Horned Frogs this week, as they head to Colorado Springs to try to avenge an opening loss of the season against the Air Force Falcons.
The Horned Frogs can join the ranks of the Georgia Bulldogs and the Oregon Ducks for teams that have already had their National Championship dreams wrecked. Head Coach Gary Patterson knew that this season had the potential to really be a struggle, but he probably didn’t know just how much of a struggle that it really would be. There is a legitimate chance that his team could come to Fort Worth at 0-2 on the season, and it might really never even get back in the Top 25 again at that point. We knew that the offense had the potential to struggle, but that wasn’t the unit that let this team down last week. Scoring 48 points against the Baylor Bears is no small feat. However, we never, ever thought that this defense would allow 50 points in a single game. QB Robert Griffin III just torched this defense for the entire 60 minutes, and if this is the way that this team is going to play this year, this will be lucky to be a bowl team, let alone a team that could have contended for a spot in the BCS.
It was a lot less of an eventful start to the season for the Falcons, who jumped out 7-0 on the South Dakota Coyotes on the first play from scrimmage on an 80 yard TD run. In fact, WR Mikel Hunter scored on two of the three times that he touched the football, taking an end around 80 yards for a score, and later accounting for a 55 yard TD reception. RB Asher Clark, who has been involved with this offense for each of the last three seasons, rumbled for 97 yards on 13 carries, while QB Tim Jefferson, Jr. had 69 yards and two TDs on 15 carries. The Falcons ended the day with 391 rushing yards and had four rushers end with at least 49 yards. There are still definitely some issues with this defense, but the 20 points allowed against the FCS school isn’t as bad as it seems considering the fact that two of the three TDs were scored after the game was well out of reach in the 4th quarter.
TCU Horned Frogs @ Air Force Falcons Pick: Still, this is a veteran Air Force side, and after three straight years of getting smacked around by the Horned Frogs, it’s time for the Falcons to soar. The TCU dynasty in the MWC is over, and it has nothing to do with the fact that the team is about to leave the conference.
