NCAA Football Free Pick: Auburn Tigers vs. Alabama Crimson Tide

Auburn Tigers
(11-0, 7-4 ATS)

Alabama Crimson Tide
(9-2, 7-4 ATS)

The Iron Bowl is the most highly anticipated NCAA football betting affair in the state of Alabama, and this year’s duel is one of the best regular season clashes in the entire nation. The Auburn Tigers will own to keep their National Championship hopes alive against their arch rivals, the Alabama Crimson Tide.

The Tigers have a lot of problems right now. Both Mike Blanc and Michael Goggans are going to be out of the lineup after getting suspended following a fight in the game against the Georgia Bulldogs. This defense was already bad enough this year, having gotten torched by a number of teams. Auburn has allowed 355.7 yards and 24.9 points per game on the season, numbers that don’t normally signify a team playing for the right to go the National Championship. The ‘D’ has allowed at least 24 points eight times on the year and has averaged giving up 28.7 points per game in its last three. Still, the Tigers have already won the SEC West, and they know that they are playing the South Carolina Gamecocks next week for the right to go to a BCS bowl game regardless of the outcome of this one. QB Cam Newton just continues to do a lot of everything for his new team. The former Florida Gator has rushed for 1,297 yards and thrown for 2,038 yards. He has accounted for 39 total TDs as well.

Alabama has been knocked off twice this year, which matches the loss total for the Tide over the last two seasons combined. Needless to say, this wasn’t what Head Coach Nick Saban envisioned in a year in which the entire offense returned, while the defense was supposed to once again be dominating in the SEC. At times, both units have been fantastic. The Tide have allowed ten points or fewer seven times on the year, and they have put at least 41 on the board four times. Part of the problem this year is that there hasn’t been a lot of emphasis on the ground game this year. RB Mark Ingram was amazing in the Heisman Trophy campaign of last season, but he only has 780 yards and ten scores in 2010. RB Trent Richardson does have 634 yards and five scores. The man that has really come to shine this year is WR Julio Jones. Jones has caught 65 passes for 885 yards and six TDs on the campaign, and he is finally showing why he was one of the most highly touted recruits in recent years.

Everyone is going to be on the Alabama bandwagon in this one, especially knowing that the Tigers are missing two of their defensive linemen. However, there is something special about the way that Newton is playing this year, and we tend to think that he will not be denied, even on the road, and even in a game like this one. Take the points, knowing that we don’t think that it will matter, as the No. 2 team in the country is set to flex its muscles.
