The rivalry between the Miami Hurricanes and the Boston College Eagles used to be one of the best in college football. The two face each other in NCAA football betting action in the final game that both will play in the 2011 campaign on Friday in South Beach.
The Eagles definitely improved throughout the season this year. They came out of the gates with terrible loss after terrible loss, and the only game that they were able to win came against the Massachusetts Minutemen at home in September. However, a 30-14 loss against the Virginia Tech Hokies, a loss in which the team fought incredibly hard against one of the best teams in the land, proved to be a bit of a turning point. The squad went on the road and beat the Maryland Terrapins the very next week, and two weeks after that, they beat the NC State Wolfpack. Last week’s 16-14 loss to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish was nothing to be ashamed of, especially since the game came in South Bend as 24 point underdogs. There’s no hiding the fact that the BC offense has been ugly this year. It has averaged just 295.8 yards and 17.6 points per game. However, the defense, led by All-American LB Luke Kuechly has been awesome at times. This team has kept three of its last four opponents down to just 17 points or fewer, and if that keeps up in this one, there might be a legitimate chance for an upset.
This is going to be a very interesting week for the Hurricanes. They were able to beat the South Florida Bulls in a ridiculously sloppy 6-3 win in Tampa Bay last week, which gave them enough wins to reach bowl eligibility. However, the university elected to make itself essentially ineligible by declaring that it would not accept a bid to a bowl game in light of the team’s off the field issues before the start of the season. That being said, there are two trains of thought. The first suggests that Miami is going to come out of the blocks with guns blazing, wanting to leave a good taste in its mouth after a suspect season with a slew of ups and downs. The second would have the Canes just getting run off of the field by the Eagles because they just wouldn’t care now that there is no bowl game to prepare for. Remember that this is the same Miami team that, in its last game ever played at the old Orange Bowl a few years ago was shut out by a bad Virginia Cavaliers outfit. And, on top of that, Head Coach Al Golden’s Temple Owls from last season faltered badly down the stretch and ended up missing a bowl game in spite of an eight win campaign.
Boston College Eagles @ Miami Hurricanes Pick: With all of this uncertainty, we really feel as though we have no choice but to take the points. Don’t be shocked if an improving BC team gives the Hurricanes all that they can handle, and maybe even then some.
