(9-2, 8-3 ATS)
(10-1, 3-4-1 ATS)
Two teams from the City of Brotherly Love meet up on Thursday night in what should be a very, very intense atmosphere for a college basketball betting affair. We’re here with our NCAA basketball picks for the nationally televised encounter between the Temple Owls and the Villanova Wildcats.
Temple already has one win against a tremendous scalp in the Big East this year, as it already tamed the Georgetown Hoyas, one of the best teams in the entire country. We’ve learned not to mess with these Atlantic 10 teams, as a lot of them are capable of pulling some tremendous upsets, just like this one. The Owls are on a roll, having won six straight games SU and going 5-1 ATS to show for it. Ramone Moore and Lavoy Allen might be the only two double digit point scorers for this team, but they are both potentially lethal and can both go off for 20+ when given the chance. The key, though, is defense. Allowing 58.1 points per game is one of the best marks in the A-10, and it has come against a schedule that has already included five foes from BCS conferences and two more meetings against non-BCS teams that were in the NCAA Tournament this year. This is the unit has to slow the Cats down to find a way to compete in this game.
For Villanova, things are finally starting to improve. Massive wins by 19 and 40 points against the Delaware Blue Hens and the Monmouth Hawks aren’t anything to really be thrilled with considering the level of competition, but wins are wins, and there’s a reason that this team only has one loss all season long. It is looking for the clean sweep of the “Big 5″ teams in the City of Brotherly Love if it can win this one. Corey Stokes and Corey Fisher are like two peas in a pod for the Wildcats, as they both have very similar stats and can do virtually anything on court. They’re averaging 15.7 and 15.5 points per game respectively, and are two of the team’s four double digit point scorers this year. Though we really still haven’t seen the best out of either Antonio Pena or Mouphtaou Yarou, Head Coach Jay Wright has gotten some great contributions out of Maalik Wayns of late. He has three straight games with double digits in scoring, and he already has a career high 19 points to show for a game against the UCLA Bruins earlier this year.
The oddsmakers didn’t make life easy on us for Temple in this one, as these college basketball odds are very, very short for a game against another Philly team. Villanova is the more talented team, but we love the way that the Owls are organized, especially defensively. This one should be touch and go the entire way, and if that’s the case, we want those six points on our side.
