The new West Division of the Mountain West will be on full display on Friday night at Qualcomm Stadium, as the San Diego State Aztecs take on the Nevada Wolf Pack in NCAA football betting action on ESPN.
Nevada has been through the mill this year. The team is 3-2, and the two losses were against UCLA and Florida State in horrid fashion to start the campaign. Aside from that, the team has been winning, but it hasn’t necessarily been all that impressive. QB Cody Fajardo has been hurt for a good chunk of the year, and though he is going to be playing in this one, it comes with a knee brace, and that really could hamper his running abilities. In the Pistol, the quarterback has to show extreme mobility, or things just aren’t going to work. That’s a major concern, as is the defense that just allowed 42 points to a very suspect Air Force Falcons team last week. The Falcons though, so run the crazy triple option, and that’s not something that we’re going to see on Friday night with San Diego State. It’s tough to find a good gauge against a team the likes of the Aztecs, as the competition really has either been very good or very bad this year for Nevada.
The Aztecs only have one win to show for their start to the season as well, and that came against New Mexico State last week. The schedule has been odd, though. SDSU has beaten New Mexico State, and it had a shot of beating Oregon State SU two weeks ago. Prior to that though, the team was blown out by Ohio State, lost to BYU by 17, and oh yes, there’s the matter of a 40-19 loss to Eastern Illinois that was completely inexplicable. It’s going to be tough just to get to a bowl game from here, but that’s still the goal for QB Quinn Kaehler and the gang. Kaehler has completed 63.2 percent of his passes for 696 yards with three TDs and three picks after taking over for the horrid QB Adam Dingwell, who was a mess in the first few games of the season. The Aztecs have really yet to find a running game either, as RB Adam Muema and RB Donnell Pumphrey haven’t been stellar at all.
The numbers haven’t been good for San Diego State, but the truth of the matter is that this is one of the sharpest teams on the college football slate in Week 6. Nevada might have three wins, but those three wins have all been suspect, and as we are going to find out on Friday night, life in the Mountain West is going to be no fun once the big boys start to come out to take on the Wolf Pack.
