The Stanley Cup Playoffs will continue on Tuesday night in NHL betting action when the Philadelphia Flyers play host to the New York Rangers on Comcast at 7:30 p.m. ET on the ice inside the Wells Fargo Center. This will be the sixth of a seven game series between these two Eastern Conference foes with the Rangers leading 3-2 after a win on Sunday.
The Rangers jumped out to a three goal lead on Sunday and never looked back in a 4-2 win to take a series lead going into this most important Game 6 in Philadelphia. Mark Staal got the scoring started in the first period, then Brad Richards and Dominic Moore scored in the second to give New York a 3-0 advantage. It was a one goal game in the final minute when Brian Boyle got control of the puck and added the empty netter to secure the victory. The Rangers will have home ice advantage should this series go to a Game 7 on Wednesday night. They have been an excellent road team this season at 26-15-2 as they split the games in Philly earlier in this series. New York G Henrik Lundqvist got his third win of the playoffs in Game 5 as he made 20 saves on 22 shots. If he is able to play that well in Game 6 he just might do enough to lead his team into the second round this weekend.
The Flyers were outplayed on Sunday as they didn’t wake up until it was too late to make up the three goal deficit. Vincent Lecavalier got them on the board with a power play goal in the second period that brought the score to 3-1. Claude Giroux then gave Philly bettors some hope with a goal early in the third period to make it a one goal game. However, the Flyers were unable to get anything going as they managed just 22 shots on goal for the entire contest. Their frequency of shots will have to be much higher in this game to have any chance staying alive. The ‘over’ is now 2-1-2 in this series after Philadelphia allowed New York to score four goals by itself in Game 5. With G Steve Mason returning from injury it looked like that would be a huge momentum shift for the Flyers. Mason had an awful game on Sunday as he stopped just 22 of the 25 shots he saw before leaving his net empty with 2:14 to go in the third.
The Rangers have shown themselves to be clearly the superior team in this series as they continue to score goals and have solid play from Lundqvist in net. We expect to see New York do everything in its power to avoid playing a Game 7 in a back-to-back situation. If that happens this series will be decided by survival of the fittest, but that won’t happen as the Rangers will pull one out in Philadelphia on Tuesday night to close out the series.
