The New York Yankees and the Washington Nationals both came into this Interleague series as winners of six straight games. It has been the Yankees who have kept their momentum going by winning the first two games in this series. The Yankees are in first place in the AL East, and the Nationals are in first place in the NL East. Can Washington salvage one game from this series or will the Yankees walk away with a sweep?
New York is a season-best 14 games over .500 right now. The Yankees offense slumped for a brief period in the month of May, but the offense is back to firing on all cylinders of late. The Bronx Bombers lead the majors with 97 home runs in 2012. Curtis Granderson already has 20 long balls himself this season. Derek Jeter continues to play as if he is in his prime. Jeter is hitting .316 with a .364 on-base-percentage. This lineup is filled with many players who will work the count and force the opposing pitcher to throw a ton of pitches over the course of a game.
Ivan Nova leads the team with 8 wins already this year. Nova has a mediocre 4.64 ERA, but he has gotten some amazing run support over the course of the year. In his last 15 innings pitched, he has only allowed one run. The Yankees defense has committed just 26 errors this year, which is the third best mark in the majors.
Most people expected the Nationals to be better this year, but hardly anyone could have predicted that they would be at the top of the tough NL East at this point in the season. Washington has taken advantage of some amazing pitching, and they are getting some great contributions from youngsters. The Nationals pitching staff has a tremendous 3.01 ERA this year. The starting pitchers have racked up 43 quality starts, and the staff as a whole has a WHIP of just 1.15. Edwin Jackson doesn’t get the recognition some of the other guys get, but he has been very good this year. Jackson has a 3.03 ERA in 2012.
The Nationals offense has definitely gotten better now that Michael Morse and Ryan Zimmerman are both healthy. Bryce Harper is hitting .289 in his rookie year with the team, and he is showing that he will likely be a perennial All-Star in this league. If the team is going to stay on top of the NL East, the offense will likely have to start producing at a little bit higher rate. Jayson Werth and Wilson Ramos are both on the 60-day disabled list.
Interleague MLB Free Pick: Yankees ML
The Yankees lineup is much better than the Nationals, and Nova is a streaky pitcher. Nova has been dominating in his last two starts. Look for the Yankees to finish off the sweep.
