Point spread: Baltimore -3.5
Week 4’s NFL Sunday Night Football matchup will feature two of the top contenders for this season’s AFC crown when the New York Jets and the Baltimore Ravens face-off at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore. Kick-off is set for 8:20 p.m. and the game will be broadcast nationally on NBC.
New York has had a bit of a roller-coaster ride so far this season with a dramatic 27-24 overtime win over Dallas on opening day as a 6.5-point home favorite. This was followed by a 32-3 rout of Jacksonville as an 8.5-point home favorite. The brief winning streak came to an end with a 34-24 loss to Oakland as a 2.5-point road favorite this past Sunday. The total has gone ‘over’ in two of the three games.
Two Jet staples with Rex Ryan at the helm have been a grinding ground game and shutdown defense, but so far they are averaging just 82 yards a game running the ball, and giving up 136.7 yards a game on the ground. The good news is that quarterback Mark Sanchez has improved his numbers with a 63.1 completion percentage for 886 yards and six touchdowns.
Baltimore has also had a couple of up and down weeks so far this year. It started things off by clobbering rival Pittsburgh 35-7 as a one-point home favorite. The team took the following week off in a 26-13 loss to Tennessee as a 5.5-point road favorite. This past week, the Ravens responded with a 37-7 beatdown of St. Louis as 5.5-point road favorites. The total has gone 2-0-1 in the three games.
Rookie wide receiver Torrey Smith had a break-out game against the Rams with five receptions for 152 yards and three touchdowns while filling in for the injured Lee Evans. Ray Rice has also looked good running the ball with 229 yards on 40 carries in the first three games.
The Jets are just 1-7 against the spread in their last eight games against the Ravens overall and 2-4 ATS in the last six meetings on the road. They have won just once on the road SU in the last six trips there and the total has stayed ‘under’ in six of the last nine meetings overall. They played each other last season and Baltimore grinded out a 10-9 win as a one-point road underdog. This time should be another knock-down, dragged out affair that stays ‘under’ the total. Look for the Ravens to win this game straight-up, but the extra half point in the current point spread is enough reason to stick with the Jets plus the 3.5 points.
