The NFL betting strategies tend to change over the course of the season. This is common and a mistake that most handicappers often commit is that they do not change their strategies. As the season changes and the teams change the strategies must change along with them.
One thing that is constant is that teams elevate their play when playing in division. Division play deserves special attention for various reasons. For example last week the New York Giants played against the Washington Redskins. This divisional game was just as important to the Giants as it was to the Redskins.
Up until that point the Giants two losses were to the Eagles and the Cowboys, making it crucial that they win. Now this week they head to Dallas in an attempt to split the season series with the Cowboys.
The AFC East is also dealing with a crucial game although it may be flying under the radar.
A week ago the entire division was knotted at 3-3. After the Jets lost a game they could have won against the Patriots they now find this week’s game against the Dolphins as a must win. The Dolphins are off a bye week and they are now right in the middle of a divisional race. They have yet to play the Patriots and so a win against the Jets would put them in the thick of the race and in a battle for the top spot.
Finally if Arizona is serious about fighting for their division they need to show up on Monday Night Football against the 49ers.
Divisional games need special attention because NFL teams approach them differently. As a handicapper it would be a mistake to treat divisional games as normal, because they are anything but.
