NFL Betting Trends- NFC Futures Update

NFL Betting Trends- NFC Futures Update

The 2012 NFL regular season is already six weeks old and the race for Super Bowl XLVII is well underway. This is a great time of the year to take a step back to see how the early results have impacted the futures odds for some of the favorites to make it to the title game from the NFC.

Using Bovada’s latest odds, here is look at few NFC teams that the betting public has at the top of their list to represent the conference in this season’s Super Bowl.

The San Francisco 49ers started the season as 11/2 second-favorites to win the NFC and despite a couple of very shaky performances against Minnesota and the New York Giants have ascended to the top spot in the conference at 13/4. There is no real reason to think that the 49ers will not be in the thick of things come playoff time, but between now and then they are going to have to figure out how to play from behind. They completely folded in their two losses this season after giving-up the early lead.

Despite a perfect 6-0 start, the betting public is still not buying into the Atlanta Falcons 100 percent due to their past failures in the postseason. They are now the second-favorites at 7/2 to win the NFC after opening at 12/1, but you would think with a record like that the Falcons would have been prohibitive favorites. The one thing that is for sure is that the road to the NFC Championship game will most likely go through the Georgia Dome at least through the Divisional Round of the playoffs. Atlanta already has a 4.5-game lead in the NFC South and a 1.5-game lead over Chicago for the best record in the conference.

A bit of the luster may be gone from the Green Bay Packers after opening the season as 7/2 favorites to win the NFC but stumbling out to a very pedestrian 3-3 start. Do not be fooled by current appearances as this team still has every intention of tracking down the Bears for the division title and forcing at least one playoff game in Lambeau Field. Green Bay is now the third-favorite to win the conference at 9/2 and there is some tremendous value in those odds if this team can get things straightened out of the defensive side of the ball. There is no question that with Aaron Rodgers leading the show that the offense can still put a ton of points on the board.

Do not look now, but last season’s Super Bowl Champions are making a strong move to the top of this season’s leader board. Since no team has won back-to-back titles since New England’s victories in 2004 and 2005 it was easy to see why the New York Giants opened the season at 10/1 get back to the big game. Through the first six weeks, they are 4-2 and now sporting 5/1 odds to win a second-straight NFC title. Much of this has to do with the incredible resiliency of this team and its quarterback Eli Manning. The word quit and most times lose just do not exist in his vocabulary making the Giants a legitimate threat to win anytime they take the field.

The final team on this short list is the Chicago Bears at 13/2. They opened the season at 9/1 and as a result of a 4-1 start have suddenly caught the eye of the betting public. Anytime you have a defense that is ranked second in the league in total yards allowed and first in points allowed, you have a chance to win quite a few games. The problem with the Bears is an offense that takes on the personality of its quarterback Jay Cutler. When he plays to his ability Chicago normally wins the game and when he falls back into an undisciplined style of play the Bears usually lose. This team will go as far as Cutler is able to take it.
