The Panthers had one of the worst off seasons in recent team history. It started by parting ways with veteran wide receiver Steve Smith who had been the vocal leader in the locker room for this team. The wide receivers let go of or lost the four top pass catchers from a season ago. The Panthers are trying to replace the 156 receptions, 1,983 receiving yards and 15 touchdown catches that the departed quartet accumulated last season. In addition to signing Jerricho Cotchery, Carolina drafted Florida State wide receiver Kelvin Benjamin in the first round and signed Tiquan Underwood from Tampa Bay and Jason Avant from Philadelphia to go with holdovers Marvin McNutt and Tavarres King, neither of whom has caught an NFL pass. In short, this offense is in trouble.
To make matters worse, Newton underwent ankle surgery in the off season and he will take some time to recover. He will not participate in OTA’s and therefore building chemistry with the new core of wide receivers will take more time than anticipated. Newton can also be distracted about contract talk.

When Newton does come back he will not have the same protection that he has been afforded in the past. Three-time Pro Bowl left tackle Jordan Gross announced his retirement in February after 11 seasons with the Panthers. According to the rankings, Gross was the third-ranked offensive tackle in the NFL last season and was Carolina’s best offensive lineman. He will be missed as an anchor on this line.
The defense will be strong again but distracted with the arrest of Pro Bowl defensive end Greg Hardy and the missing pieces in the secondary. The Panthers lost three-fourths of their starting secondary and that will equate to big trouble in a division that features Matt Ryan and Drew Brees.
The Panthers are in trouble this year and the best bet is that they will finish last in the NFC South.
