NFL Pick: New England Patriots vs Buffalo Bills
NFL Point Spread: Patriots -8
Who would have thought that this would be a matchup of two unbeaten teams in week three? Just about everyone assumed New England would be 2-0 at this point, but most people probably thought the Bills would be 0-2. Buffalo crushed the Chiefs in week one and came back to down the Raiders last week. Can the upstart Bills topple the mighty Patriots?
If you haven’t heard about Tom Brady’s start to this season, then you are probably living under a rock. Brady has thrown for 940 yards in just two games, which is an NFL record. What’s most impressive about this feat? I believe it is the fact that he has done this against two solid defenses in the Dolphins and the Chargers. Wes Welker and Deion Branch lead the team with 15 receptions each. Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski give the Patriots the best tight end tandem in the NFL. Gronkowski has three touchdowns in two games, and Hernandez has two touchdown receptions. BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Danny Woodhead are sharing carries in the backfield for New England so far this season.
The Patriots defense has given up a ton of yardage through the air in the first couple weeks. Chad Henne carved them up in week one, and then Phillip Rivers did the same last weekend. This is a fairly young secondary, and they will probably be susceptible unless the Patriots front seven gets pressure on the opposing quarterback. The front line of this defense is very talented, and I expect them to do well against the run this year.
Ryan Fitzpatrick has been absolutely spectacular this year. The Harvard alum has seven touchdowns and just one interception so far this season. Fitzpatrick has a stellar quarterback rating of 109.6 in 2011. Fred Jackson is averaging 6.5 yards per carry so far this year, and the Bills ground game has been a pleasant surprise. C.J. Spiller is a great change of pace runner for Buffalo. Steve Johnson is quickly emerging as a big play threat on the outside. He hauled in a key touchdown in last week’s win over Oakland. It is amazing to say this, but it seems that the Bills have plenty of weapons on offense right now.
The Bills defense has a lot of new faces this season. Shawne Merriman was picked up in the offseason, and he is now a starting linebacker for the team. Marcell Dareus was the team’s first round draft pick, and he’ll anchor the defensive line for the Bills. This unit has given up a decent amount of yards so far this year, but they have done a nice job keeping the opposition out of the end zone.
The Patriots are a better team than they were last year at this time. I know the Bills are improved as well, but they aren’t in the same class as New England. Expect Brady and the Patriots to carve up the Bills secondary in this one.
