The last time the San Diego Chargers met the Kansas City Chiefs, these two teams were like polar opposites. Now, they’re just one game away from being level once again, and they meet in NFL betting action on Monday Night Football this week.
San Diego has a bad, bad history of tumbling in games like this one. This is a prototypical game that it is favored by a short point spread, but no one is expecting it to lose. QB Philip Rivers’ frustrations continued last week when he was shut out in the second half against the New York Jets in a game in which the Bolts really had in hand and blew down the stretch. The running game just isn’t getting the job done to help him out to say the least. RB Ryan Mathews has still not really proven that he can be a between the tackles type of back, and he only has three scores on the season, and RB Michael Tolbert has just 3.5 yards per carry to his credit on the year. Of course, a lot of that is thanks to goal line and short yardage situations, but still, it’s a pathetic rushing average. The two are also the top two receivers on the team in terms of receptions, as they have 52 grabs for 518 yards between them. TE Antonio Gates came back to the fold last week and scored a touchdown, but he still only has 128 yards and that one score on the season.
This is the week that we will find out whether we should be all that excited over the Chiefs’ three game winning streak. What we know is that they really haven’t beaten anybody whatsoever on this streak. Sure, they beat the 4-3 Oakland Raiders on the road 28-0, but that was a game in which QB Carson Palmer was playing after just three days of practice with a brand new team. The Minnesota Vikings and Indianapolis Colts only have one win between them, and that came against a putrid Arizona Cardinals outfit. It’s amazing to think that a win in this game, and these three teams are tied atop the AFC West at 4-3. But we have to remember that this team did win the division last year, and the Chiefs aren’t going to lay down and die even though RB Jamaal Charles is out for the season with an ACL injury. Of course, getting more than 173.7 yards per game from QB Matt Cassel and this offense would help dramatically, as that only ranks No. 30 in the league.
San Diego Chargers @ Kansas City Chiefs Pick: We’ve been fooled by the Chargers too many times in this situation. It’s just unbelievable how often San Diego loses a game like this. We still really don’t believe in the Chiefs, but we feel like we have no choice but to the take the field goal and change head start that we are getting in this one, as that really might be the difference, just as it proved to be the first time that these two teams met this year.
