The City of Brotherly Love will get its first look at NFL betting action in 2010, as the Philadelphia Eagles clash with the Jacksonville Jaguars in a preseason wagering war.
Keep a very close eye on the quarterback situation in Jacksonville. It is becoming more and more clear that HC Jack Del Rio is unhappy with QB David Garrard, as the former ECU Pirate has never thrown for more than 18 TD passes in his career. Though Garrard will clearly start and it will be his job to lose in the preseason, both Luke McCown and rookie Trevor Harris will get their chances to impress. The reserve running back spot is also going to be one that is very hotly contested for the Jags. We already know that RB Maurice Jones-Drew has the starting nod on lockdown, but last season, he was spelled by a plethora of backs. Rashad Jennings, Greg Jones, and rookie Deji Karim are going to try to secure some carries in NFL preseason betting action. There is also a big hole to fill at the second wide receiver position. Mike Thomas appearances to be entrenched at this point, but Troy Williamson, Jarett Dillard, and Tiquan Underwood could all make their cases. Either way you look at it, this is an offense with a slew of question marks to be answered in these exhibitions.
Meanwhile in Philadelphia, a new era is about to kick in. QB Kevin Kolb will be the man who leads the Eagles out of the tunnel each and every Sunday this year, and it will be up to him to give the squad a chance at beating the Super Bowl XLV odds. Kolb is a gunslinger, but he hasn’t seen much in the way of reps in live game action. QB Michael Vick is still incredibly dynamic and a heck of a second option. The third string signal caller is rookie Mike Kafka, who was drafted to be the backup to Kolb once QB Donovan McNabb was traded. Many are high on Kafka coming into this season, and he could be tremendous rookie to watch in the preseason. There is a ton of hope for a very deep offensive line to protect Kolb so he can find he equally deep set of receivers. Watch out for names like Hank Baskett, Jason Avant, and rookie Riley Cooper to make a different in the preseason. If you like Philly against the football lines on Friday though, you’re going to love the impact its rookies should have on defense. Keep a very close eye on DE Brandon Graham and S Nate Allen, both of which are vying to become starters on a talented defense.
The Eagles have to be excited to get back to action after last year’s debacle of an end of the season. Though we aren’t necessarily so sure how well this team will play when the games are for keeps in a few weeks, we tend to believe that sheer depth, athleticism, and desire should carry them to victories more often than not in the preseason. Philly is the NFL betting play on Friday the 13th.
