“The Drum,” aka Lucas Oil Stadium will be opened up for the first time in the 2010 NFL betting campaign, as the Indianapolis Colts play host to the San Francisco 49ers in NFL preseason betting action.

The 49ers have a heck of a lot of work to do this year to live up to the hype as the odds on favorites in the NFC West. For once, their starting quarterback position seems to be nailed down, as Alex Smith will be leading the troops. His backup is clearly going to be David Carr, who is a former #1 overall pick in his own rights. The battle between Nate Davis and Jarrett Brown should be a fun one to watch, as only one will likely make the team. Keep a close eye on the offensive line play for San Fran. This was one of the youngest O-Lines in the league last year, and it will only get younger with the additions of first round draft choices Mike Iupati and Anthony Davis. Also watch out for the running backs that follow Frank Gore in this NFL betting battle. RB Glen Coffee suddenly left the team this week, leaving a big opening as the reserve running back. Rookie Anthony Dixon could suddenly have a big role to play in this offense, while both Jehuu Caulcrick and Michael Robinson will get carries as well.

Don’t expect to see much in the same of potent offensive play for the Colts in the preseason, as they always take their exhibitions very, very lightly. QB Peyton Manning and the starters might see two drives on the field. The only questions that the starting offense really has to offer is how Manning can work with new OC Clyde Christensen and whether or not WR Anthony Gonzalez is going to be a starter on the outside or in the slot. Also watch the left guard position, as Tony Ugoh is being pushed by a host of contenders. Indy will only as far as its backups take it in the preseason, which usually isn’t very far. Backup QBs Curtis Painter, Tom Brandstater, and Tim Hiller are nothing to really write home about. The defense for Indianapolis might be a different story in the preseason, though. Two key rookies, DE Jerry Hughes and LB Pat Angerer are fighting for time in the starting lineup, and both could be asked to take additional reps in the preseason. Returning S Bob Sanders will be on display as well, even though he will likely be limited in this first week. This appears to be the deepest defense that the Colts have had in recent years, and that should be on display this week against the Niners.

Defense. That’s what we expect to see a lot of in this game. Neither team has a particularly strong offense once you take the starters out, and we tend to feel as though there will be a lot of sloppy play with the quarterbacks. We’d love to take Indianapolis and the points at home, but placing pro football betting wagers on the Colts in the preseason has been the equivalent of death in recent years. Instead, we’ll take the safer play and bank on a disgustingly boring snooze fest.
