NFL Preseason Betting: New Orleans Saints at Indianapolis Colts

The preseason schedule hits week three in the National Football League and fans are giddy because this is the week that teams will play their starters for extended minutes. Fans of the New Orleans Saints are especially excited since they will see their best player, quarterback Drew Brees in action for the first time this season.

The NFL preseason odds for this game favor the Colts as they opened as (-1) point favorites and that line has since increased to (-2) at several of the top rated sportsbooks. The total opened up at 46 and is now at 47 as a high scoring game is expected. This is due to a combination of two very good offenses and a high rate of penalties that are being called in the first two weeks of the preseason.

The Colts are the favorites in this game, but the sports betting public are backing the road team. A latest look at the NFL consensus wagering tool available at shows that 68 percent of the early betting is on the Saints.

The Saints may be the better team in the regular season, but this is preseason. The Saints will have Brees back in the lineup, but he will not be ready for game speed and will take a few drives to get back into the rhythm. There is also a good chance he does not go as deep as most quarterbacks do in week three because he is recovering from an oblique injury. The Saints could also be without one of their newest weapons.

Receiver Brandin Cooks was back in practice on a limited basis Thursday after missing the three previous days with a stomach virus/fever. When asked if Cooks will play against the Colts, coach Sean Payton said, “We’ll see.”

Although wide receiver Reggie Wayne is a game-time decision for the Colts, expect him to get some reps after being out due to injury. The biggest thing to watch will be this improved Colts defense.

This defense is eager to prove that they are just as good as the offense.  The Colts’ starting defense held the Giants to 53 yards on 20 plays in fours series last weekend. The Colts also played very well against the Jets, but let’s face it those are not two very intimidating offenses. The game against the Saints will provide the true test for this defense.

The Saints are 2-6 ATS (against the spread) in their last 8 road games and the Colts are 4-0 ATS in the last four home games. As pointed out during the Gridiron Gambling Report, Saints coach Sean Payton is 7-1 in his last 8 games in week three of the preseason, but this game is different since they are easing Brees back into game playing shape.

The Colts are at home and are more focused at winning at this point. If you are going to bet on this game, the Colts are the team to play.
