NFL Pre-Season Odds at VietBet — Giants-Steelers Game Brings Out Some Emotions
As they get ready to play the Pittsburgh Steelers in NFL pre-season betting action on Saturday night (August 9 – 7:30 PM ET), the New York Giants are coming off a game where they experienced some real positives. But they have also come across an emotional low, so feelings are mixed coming into this contest, which takes place at MetLife Stadium.
Speaking of mixed feelings, this game is one that is truly “all in the family.” Emotions may be a little torn in the Mara and Rooney clans, who own the Giants and Steelers, respectively, and are connected by marriage. In case you were wondering who Kate Mara (Entourage, 24, House of Cards) and Rooney Mara (The Social Network, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo) root for when these teams get together, we can offer a little insight, at least from Kate, who says, “If I’m mad at my mom I root for the Giants, and if I’m pissed at my dad I root for the Steelers”
In the NFL pre-season odds that have been posted at VietBet, the Giants are the favorites:
New York Giants -2.5
Pittsburgh Steelers +2.5
Over 36.5 Points -110
Under 36.5 Points -110
In the 17-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills in the Hall of Fame Game, Eli Manning took the first big step in the process of indoctrinating himself into the West Coast offense, and the Giants may have found a sleeper at the receiver spot as they move forward with a “game in hand” over the Steelers.
Manning completed six out of seven passes as he worked out of new offensive coordinator Ben McAdoo’s scheme. Even though Manning is a veteran by now and has two Super Bowl MVP awards,VietBet patrons know there is still a learning curve for a guy who is not used to this particular style. McAdoo and quarterback coach Danny Langsdorf feel Manning should be able to complete 70% of his passes, but Eli has done that in only 15 of his 153 NFL games, compared to his brother’s 66 games of 70% or more.
This approach, at least in part, is designed to cut down on mistakes and sacks. Manning threw 27 interceptions last season. On Sunday night there were no sacks given up by the Giants’ offensive line.
Backup Ryan Nassib looks like he is more command of the offense. The former Syracuse signal-caller threw a 73-yard TD pass to Corey Washington, in what was a sensational play by the rookie receiver, who was undrafted out of Newberry College. At 6’4″, he is the biggest New York receiver and can be useful for that reason.
It wasn’t a picnic in the least for Pittsburgh last season, as the Men of Steel, who had an 8-8 record despite winning six of the last eight games, missed the playoffs for the second straight year, which was a downer for many NFL odds bettors. They ought to be a little more stable at the running back position, and they get back center Maurkice Pouncey, one of the best in the business, who got injured in the first week and missed the rest of the season.
Pittsburgh looks for the well-traveled LaGarrette Blount to make an impact as he will join Le’Veon Bell in what Mike Tomlin hopes is a backfield that improves the Steelers’ #27 NFL rank in rushing last season.
There will probably be more of an emphasis on the no-huddle offense with the Steelers, who were able to play that seamlessly most of the time as they finished strong down the stretch. Bruce Gradkowski is an experienced backup QB. After being fired by the Titans, Mike Munchak, a Hall of Famer, joined Tomlin’s staff as an offensive line coach. Whoever is throwing for the Steelers will not have an especially deep receiver corps, but those analyzing the NFL pre-season odds should expect some spirited competition there, since there aren’t many guys here who stand out from the others.
The Giants (+2500 to win the NFC title at VietBet) got some rough news a couple of days ago when they received word from doctors that running back David Wilson, who was taken in the first round out of Virginia Tech in 2012 and underwent neck surgery in the off-season, has been advised not to play again. He suffered a re-aggravation of that injury during a drill and obviously the news was not good. Some of his teammates are deflated over that, but Wilson is taking it in good spirits, and the Giants are discovering that Andre Williams, who had 6.9 yards per carry against the Bills, is probably going to be a key player for them.
Still, with the short week, and Manning going through some growing pains in the new offense, we feel a bit more comfortable taking the points with the Steelers in the NFL pre-season odds.
