NCAA Basketball Pick – February 18th
The new week of college basketball betting action kicks off from the Steel City on Monday night, where the Pittsburgh Panthers will engage in a big time battle against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The Irish are coming off of a tough week. We knew that matters could have been difficult, knowing that the week before ended with a five-overtime win against the Louisville Cardinals. The truth of the matter though, is that this has not been a great team to back over the course of the last few weeks. Over the course of the last 10 games, Notre Dame has been beaten by St. John’s, Georgetown, Syracuse, and Providence, it was lucky to survive two overtime games against DePaul, was lucky to take down Villanova at home, and was lucky to hold off South Florida, and was extremely lucky to win that five-OT game. The challenges are only going to get more difficult down the stretch, and there is a good chance that this club is going to be punished when push comes to shove for the NCAA Tournament. There’s no doubt that F Jack Cooley and the gang are going dancing, but the fact of the matter is that this could be a team that falls into the bottom half of the bracket quickly.
The Panthers had a lousy end to their weekend as well, getting trounced by 10 to the Marquette Golden Eagles in Milwaukee. The schedule is at least looser from here for U-Pitt, as it is going to be favored in each of its last five regular season games. What was odd about that game against Marquette was how badly this defense played. This is a Pittsburgh outfit that ranks eighth in the country in total ‘D’, allowing just 55.4 points per game. The club is allowing just 24.8 rebounds per game as well. Against Marquette this season, the Panthers allowed an average of 76.5 points and 31.5 rebounds per game, and that just didn’t cut it in a pair of defeats. Of course, if you take those games out, the Panthers are 8-1 SU and 6-3 ATS over the course of their last nine games, and that’s why this team has gone from the bubble to comfortably in the NCAA Tournament.
Notre Dame was definitively the better team the first time that these two teams met, but we aren’t so sure that that is going to stay the case in this one. This is a much different Pittsburgh outfit that we are going to see on the court on Monday night, and it is one that we think is going to be good enough to pick up a ‘W’ over a slumping Fighting Irish squad.
