NCAA Basketball Pick – February 4th
A pair of struggling teams in the Big East are going to meet on the hardwood at the Carrier Dome for some college basketball betting action on Big Monday, as the Syracuse Orange host the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The Irish are at least keeping their winning streak going, but their 18 wins don’t feel nearly as impressive as some of the other 18-win teams from around the country, especially here in the Big East. They probably aren’t in a position to make a run deep into the dance right now, and they have to get a heck of a lot better if that fact is going to change. Looking on the surface, the Irish are winners of the in a row and six out of nine in the Big East. However, digging deeper, you see a lot of close wins against a lot of teams that just aren’t all that great. The Fighting Irish haven’t played against any of the truly elite teams here in conference play until Monday night. Missing G Scott Martin is really hurting this offense, which has now averaged just 64.9 points per game in its last seven games. There’s only so much that G Jerian Grant, G Eric Atkins, and F Jack Cooley can do, and when their limitations are pushed to the max, someone else has to step up, something that hasn’t been happening so much.
Syracuse is on the skids right now, too. The team has lost two games in a row and failed to cover three straight and five out of six. The two losses really have been suspect at best, and they came spread a week apart. The Orange have been knocked down by a pair of teams that have caught some fire, the Pittsburgh Panthers and Villanova Wildcats. Again, the question that we have about the ‘Cuse is whether they really have the ability to win games without one of their cogs in the lineup. F James Southerland is academically ineligible and will likely miss the rest of the year. As a result, gone is one of the four men that were averaging between 12 and 14 points per game. Now, just G Brandon Triche, F CJ Fair, and G Michael Carter-Williams are doing the damage offensively, and no one else on the team has stepped up to pick up the slack. F Rakeem Christmas just had a game where he was shut out against U-Pitt, and that’s not going to cut it for sure.
We really thought that this would be a lower spread than this. Both of these teams look awfully similar right now, with the only difference being that the Orange have figured out how to win some big time games over big time clubs. That’ll be enough to get them the win on Monday night, but to ask for a cover is something totally different. Syracuse 69 – Notre Dame 64
