College Football Betting Favorite: Oklahoma -3.5
Notre Dame went into Oklahoma last year and embarrassed the Sooners on their home turf. The Fighting Irish came away with a 30-13 win as a 10.5 point underdog in that game. The Sooners would love nothing more than to get some revenge by knocking off Notre Dame in South Bend this weekend. Let’s take a look at this marquee matchup.
Oklahoma comes into this game with a perfect 3-0 record. The Sooners haven’t really been tested all that much this season. They had a lackluster performance against West Virginia in a 16-7 win, but they blasted both Louisiana Monroe and Tulsa in their other two contests. Freshman Trevor Knight started the season as the quarterback, but Blake Bell has taken over in the last couple weeks. Bell threw for 413 yards in what was essentially a coming out party for him last weekend. Expect Bell to continue to get the starts moving forward. Bell is a very athletic quarterback, and as long as he keeps throwing the ball well this offense should be dangerous.
Oklahoma has a very good running back in Brennan Clay. Clay is averaging 5.8 yards per carry this year, but he’ll be up against a very good Notre Dame front seven in this one. Defensively, Oklahoma has been terrific at keeping their opponents off the board. They have given up some yardage, but the Sooners defense is allowing just 9 points per game. Last year, Notre Dame ran for 215 yards against the Sooners. Oklahoma’s run defense will have to be much better in this one.
Notre Dame comes into this one with a 3-1 record. The Fighting Irish were beaten 41-30 by Michigan in Ann Arbor, but they have won their other three games. Though Notre Dame has won their last two games, they haven’t been very impressive in those games. They trailed most of the game against a poor Purdue team before pulling out a 31-24 win. Last week, Notre Dame was outgained at home against Michigan State, but they managed to win 17-13. Notre Dame had only 220 yards of total offense in that game. The defense came up with big stops to preserve the victory late in the game.
Tommy Rees is the main man at quarterback this year for Notre Dame. Rees has played well so far this year. He has thrown for 1,111 yards and eight touchdowns compared to just two interceptions. Notre Dame needs some help from their running game. The Fighting Irish are 101st in the country in rushing yards so far this season. Defensively, the Fighting Irish have been very good against the run. They have struggled against the pass. The defense will need to play at their best this weekend, because Oklahoma has a lot of weapons on offense.
Free Pick: Under 48.5
The side is a tough call here. Oklahoma being more than a field goal favorite on the road tells us that the oddsmakers aren’t too high on Notre Dame. I think both defenses will have the advantage here. I like the under.
