Bedlam ensues once again in Norman, where the Oklahoma State Cowboys are going to look to go on the road and take a bite out of their arch rivals, the Oklahoma Sooners.
The Pokes haven’t been in the best of form of late, as they were tested by the lowly West Virginia Mountaineers at home on Saturday a week after losing at the gun to the Kansas Jayhawks. That said, they still have one of the best teams in the land, and they are set to prove it here in this very tough three game stretch against Oklahoma, the Baylor Bears, and the Iowa State Cyclones. We talk about it all the time with Okie State. This is one of the best offensive teams in the land, scoring 84.3 points per game, and a lot of that is because this is a team which has one of the best backcourts in the country. G Marcus Smart is the leader of the bunch at 17.1 points per game, though he is coming off of one of his worst showings of his career against WVU when he scored just four points. If there’s a problem though, it comes on the glass for the Cowboys. They’re outrebounding their foes by 4.4 rebounds per game, but that’s a bad margin to have when you’re only a handful of games into the conference slate.
Keep a really close eye on F Ryan Spangler in this one. Spangler is one of the best big men in the Big XII, averaging 9.8 boards per night. He’s not going to really have an equal on the court, and if the Cowboys start missing shots from the outside left and right, this is the man that could end up with the big double-double type of game and ultimately be the player of the game as well. Though most openly recognize the fact that the Sooners aren’t one of the best two or three teams in the Big XII, they are definitely playing like it for the moment. They have gone on the road twice in the last week, beating the Texas Tech Red Raiders and Baylor, and in the middle, they slammed the TCU Horned Frogs to boot. This is a team which has already tested the Kansas Jayhawks and beaten the Iowa State Cyclones and Texas Longhorns as well, so the Sooners aren’t a joke by any stretch of the imagination.
The Sooners know that they are going to be in the forefront in this one at home, and we are actually a bit surprised that they are getting points in this game. Though we do think that Smart is going to rebound from a bad performance against West Virginia, there are guards which can at least match up with him on OU. We can’t say the same in the paint for the Cowboys. Spangler comes forward with a huge day and leads the Sooners to an upset in Bedlam on Monday night. Oklahoma 84 – Oklahoma State 77
