The Oregon State Beavers still control their own destiny in the Pac-10 race, but without a victory in Pasadena on Saturday over the UCLA Bruins, there won’t be any hope to get to the Rose Bowl.
Every week, we keeping say that the Beavers are one of the best teams in this conference, and they were very unlucky to not beat the Washington Huskies up in Seattle earlier this year. However, OSU must remember that this is one of two games that it is going to be favored in for the rest of this season in all likelihood, and it has to remember that it still needs two more wins just to ensure itself of a bowl game. The Beavers are really starting to get RB Jacquizz Rodgers going. Rodgers has rumbled for an average of 121.8 yards per game in his last four overall, and is now up to 740 rushing yards and 139 receiving yards on the year. Rodgers has six scores on the ground in his last two games and now has 15 for the season. QB Ryan Katz is spreading the ball all over the field this year without WR James Rodgers in the lineup, as he has six different receivers with at least 130 yards on the year. Katz has thrown for 1,503 yards and 11 scores in 2010.
With QB Kevin Prince potentially done for the season, it is up to QB Richard Brehaut to at least try to salvage an offense that is averaging just 120.0 yards per game through the air. If Brehaut can’t get going, RB Johnathan Franklin is really the only option this team has on offense. Franklin has rushed for 792 yards and five scores this year, though his backup RB Derrick Coleman is getting more and more carries as the season wears on. He has 408 yards and five TDs. Defensively, things at least remotely improved last week in a 29-21 loss to the Arizona Wildcats, but UCLA is still licking its wounds from giving up 60 to the Oregon Ducks two weeks ago. In Pac-10 play this year, the Bruins are being outscored by an average of 29.5 points per game in losses, while they are 0-5 ATS to show for their work. The only win, and what might be the only win of the season, came against the Washington State Cougars, clearly the worst team in the conference.
This just isn’t a good spot for the Bruins to be in right now. Will they win another game this year? It really doesn’t seem likely that that happens. This clash is just too important for the Beavers to get bamboozled on, and we think that they are going to walk out of the Rose Bowl on Saturday, knowing that they have just three more hurdles to clear to return there on January 1st.
