The Tampa Bay Rays were eliminated from the playoffs last night, but they are still one of the hottest teams that the game has to offer. They’ll try to win their 90th game of the season at the expense of the Baltimore Orioles on Tuesday night in MLB betting action.
The Orioles really took a big step in the wrong direction yesterday, as they are now for some big time problems. They’re in Tampa Bay now, and if the season were to end today, they would have a day off to fly to Oakland for a one-game playoff against the Athletics, and then they would have to fly back across the country the very next day to get back to Baltimore to take on the Texas Rangers in the first round of the playoff. Baltimore is in the playoffs, but it would really like to at least close this one-game gap on the New York Yankees in the AL East. If these two teams remain tied at the end of 162 games, they’ll play a 163rd in Baltimore on Thursday, which could make travel plans even worse. The Orioles do know that winning these last two games would at least ensure that the Wild Card game, if nothing else, is played at Camden Yards, and Manager Buck Showalter has to be impressing that to his club. Miguel Gonzalez gets the ball tonight in the second to last game of the regular season. He’s 8-4 for the O’s, and he sports a 3.45 ERA.
Tampa Bay’s season is now over with. With 14 games left in the season, the team had to figure that going 11-1 in the first 12 would be good enough to at least let it control its own destiny to get into the playoffs. Alas, that hasn’t been the case, but Manager Joe Maddon has to be proud of his squad regardless. The Rays are going to let James Shields get the ball on Tuesday night to help spoil Baltimore’s season. The righty is likely making his last appearance in a Rays uniform, knowing that he has a club option for 2013 that either won’t be picked up, or will be picked up only for the sake of trying to shop him for trade value in the offseason. As it is, the lifetime member of the rays has 87 wins to his credit, 15 of which have come this year, and that includes two complete game shutouts. Shields has a 3.62 ERA and a 1.21 WHIP for the season, and he now has 208 strikeouts as well.
The heart of the Rays never stops beating, and that will probably show at the Trop on Tuesday. If Baltimore had plans of avoiding a hectic travel schedule, that just won’t end up happening. Expect to see the Orioles have their bags packed for the West Coast after a loss in Game 161 on Tuesday night. Tampa Bay 6 – Baltimore 3
