The Stanley Cup Playoffs will continue on Sunday night in NHL betting action when the New York Rangers play host to the Pittsburgh Penguins on NBC Sports Network at 7:00 p.m. ET on the ice inside Madison Square Garden. The Rangers come in as a slight ‘underdog’ in Game 6 after they closed the gap to 3-2 with a win on Friday night.
The Penguins were dominated on Friday and took a 5-1 loss to the Rangers at the CONSOL Energy Center as they ruined an opportunity to end this series. They will be afforded another chance this time on the road to get the job done and move onto the Eastern Conference Finals. Evgeni Malkin had the only goal for Pittsburgh as he beat a pair of New York defenders along the way for a highlight reel play. Other than that, the Pens had their worst outing of the playoffs and will try to rebound in this game. It’s no secret this offense has struggled and been bailed out by the play of G Marc-Andre Fleury to get this far. In Friday’s game he faced 34 shots and only managed to save 30 of them in the loss. Fleury will have to be spectacular once again in this contest if the offense continues to struggle. The good news for Pittsburgh bettors, this team is 7-1 in its L/8 games when it gives up five goals or more in the previous contest.
The Rangers dug deep and finally found their offense after being shut out in back-to-back games to fall into a 3-1 hole in the series. Chris Kreider returned from injury to get the scoring started with an early goal and Derick Brassard scored for a 2-0 lead after the first period. Brassard finished the game with two goals and one assist as his play immensely helped this struggling New York offensive unit. Now the Rangers face another win-or-go home situation on Sunday and they will have to keep the intensity going on both sides of the ice. Their G Henrik Lundqvist was clutch making saves on 31 of the 32 shots he saw in the game. That was big for Lundqvist who had lost three straight starts, but it wasn’t all his fault as the offense wasn’t giving him any support. The two power play goals New York scored in Game 5 was its first successful extra man goals in over 40 attempts. The Rangers are just 1-5 in their L/6 home games following a win as the trends are not in their favor heading into this game.
The Penguins have all the trends in their favor as road teams are 5-1 in the L/6 meetings coming into this contest. There’s nothing quite like a Game 7 in hockey and though it will be a tall order for the Rangers to beat conventional thinking, we like their chances on Sunday. It won’t be pretty, but we expect to see the Rangers force Game 7 by shutting down the Penguins once again and doing just enough on the offensive end to get a win. Pittsburgh Penguins @ New York Rangers Pick: New York Rangers
