Wednesday night on the ice in NHL betting action finds the New York Rangers serving as the visiting team playing the New York Islanders at 7:30 p.m. ET outside in the elements at Yankee Stadium. It has been snowing in New York all week, but currently there is no chance of snow during this contest.
The Rangers are currently living in the shadow of the dominant Pittsburgh Penguins in the Metropolitan Division with 59 points on the year. Sunday night saw the Rangers have an offensive explosion in a 7-3 win over the New Jersey Devils. A four goal second period included two goals from LW Mats Zuccarello powered the Rangers win. The Rangers give up exactly the amount of goals they score on average with 2.5 goals scored per game and 2.5 given up per game. Rangers C Brad Richards has 13 goals and 25 assists to lead the offensive output this season. Richards has nine points in his last 10 outings with six assists and three goals. The Rangers have won seven of their last 10 games including two separate three-game win streaks. When these two met last week LW Rick Nash scored two goals in the 5-3 loss. As the Rangers continue to fight for position in the Eastern Conference, this is the sort of game they need to win against the lesser teams of the league. The Rangers are very healthy right now and are getting hot at the right time to make a run for the Stanley Cup.
The Islanders are at the very bottom of the Metropolitan Division and virtually have no shot of going anywhere this season. Monday night saw the Isles take yet another loss to the Boston Bruins 6-3 in Long Island. Now they will take their problems outside into what is expected to be temperatures in the teens in the Bronx. The Islanders give up 3.2 goals per game ranking them 28th in the league, but they have a respectable offense that scores 2.8 goals per game. The Isles were able to hang around with the Bruins in their last time out trailing 4-3 after two periods before giving up two goals in the third to drop their third straight decision. Islanders C John Tavares has been the bright spot to an otherwise forgettable year scoring 23 goals and registering 41 assists. He had scored at least one point in six straight games before he was completely shut out in Tuesday’s loss. If the Isles want to get a win in the Bronx, they will need a big game from Tavares and for their defense to step up.
The smart money has to be on the Rangers in this game. This is the sort of game where all the pressure is on the Rangers to continue winning as the playoffs are not too far down the calendar. In case you’re wondering, New York is 7-3 against the puck-line in its last 10 games. Look for the Rangers to have a big night outside in the Bronx and the Islanders to continue a miserable season.
