The Tampa Bay Rays will make one last push at a spot in the playoffs in the AL East starting on Tuesday night in MLB betting action when they send their ace to the hill against the Boston Red Sox.
Tampa Bay has won five in a row, but it pretty much might have to win out to get into the playoffs. The Baltimore Orioles are four games in front of it, while the Oakland Athletics, though slumping, are still three up. There are still only nine games to play, but those last three are against the O’s at Tropicana Field, so the potential is still there for sure. The best man to get the job done, David Price, is taking the hill for the Rays tonight. He has two more starts this year, and perhaps three if he is pushed to start in the final game of the season, and he is hoping to get to 20 wins this year. Price probably won’t win the Cy Young, but he has the numbers for the award. He needs 12 more strikeouts to get to 200 for the year, and he is working on a career-best 2.58 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. He has a complete game shutout, and he is coming off of a great start against these Sox when he allowed just three runs in 7.1 innings of work in a ‘W’.
The Sox just keep sliding, and it is amazing to think that they still don’t have 70 wins on the year. Boston hasn’t had much to be happy about this year, but at least Clay Buchholz has had a decent year. He pitched in that game against Price last week, and he really outpitched the man that is certainly in Cy Young consideration. Buchholz allowed just four hits and two walks in seven scoreless innings, marking his fifth straight pretty darn good start. Unfortunately for him, he hasn’t gotten a win in any of those games. For the year though, Buchholz is 11-6 with a 4.16 ERA. He has 122 strikeouts against 60 walks, and though that isn’t the greatest ratio in the world, it’s one of the best marks that the righty has had in his career. Batters are only hitting .256 against him though, and his WHIP is a very respectable 1.28. If there is a pitcher that can beat Price, Buchholz is that man.
There’s just no reason to think that the Rays can’t get the job done in this one significantly more often than not. It just feels like Tampa Bay is still on a conquest to get into the playoffs, and this is going to be another step in the right direction towards the playoffs. Tampa Bay 5 – Boston 3
