Two teams fighting for a spot in the playoffs will get together on Tuesday in NHL betting action when the Columbus Blue Jackets play host to the Detroit Red Wings on NBC Sports Network at 7:30 p.m. ET on the ice inside Nationwide Arena.
The Red Wings were handed an overtime loss 4-3 to the Minnesota Wild in their last time out on Sunday. Despite two first period goals from C Gustav Nyquist Detroit was unable to hang onto the lead and fell for the first time in its L/4 games. The loss kept the Red Wings tied with the Toronto Maple Leafs with 80 points in the Atlantic Division standings and five points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the final playoff position. The offense has been clicking for them during a three game winning streak that produced 3.6 goals per game over that short stretch. Unfortunately, the defense has left much to be desired in hockey town as it gives up 2.7 goals per game this season. If Detroit is to reach the playoffs it will be solely up to its offense that is missing leader LW Henrik Zetterberg who hasn’t dressed since the Olympic break with a back injury that he suffered in Sochi. He will require another two-to-four weeks to recover from the surgery he had to repair the damage to a herniated disc in his back. Zetterberg’s 16 goals and 32 assists will be a welcomed sight as soon as he can make a return.
The Blue Jackets have fallen apart in their last two games taking losses to the New York Islanders 2-0 on Sunday and the New York Rangers 3-1 on Friday. As a result, they find themselves one point behind the Washington Capitals and two points behind the Rangers in the Metropolitan Division standings with 78 points on the year. The offense has struggled lately and that has led to the ‘under’ cashing in seven of Columbus’ L/10 games. The bright spot of the attack has been C Ryan Johansen who has 27 goals and 25 assists thus far. He has been completely shut down in the last two games as have his teammates in back-to-back losses. This team has been inconsistent at best and will need to go on a winning streak at some point if it wants to reach the playoffs. Being at home for this game should be an advantage for the Blue Jackets as they are 19-13-3 SU on home ice this season.
The last time these two met was back on March 11th in Columbus as the Blue Jackets took a 4-1 victory over the Red Wings at home. If that is to be used as any indication bettors can expect the ‘under’ to have a great chance at coming in once again. Columbus has struggled to score goals lately, but we expect it to get a big effort on the defensive end and stop Detroit enough to come away with the win. The Blue Jackets have won four of the L/5 meetings in this series and should be able to defend their home ice against the Red Wings for the second time this month.
