Game Overview

NL Central rivals meet in what might be a playoff preview for MLB betting fans to enjoy, as the Cincinnati Reds take to the field at Busch Stadium against the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Reds are still fighting to win home field advantage in the National League playoffs, but their time is running short. They’re level with the Washington Nationals, but they will lose the season tiebreaker and drop into the No. 2 slot. The good news is that they are now guaranteed home field advantage in at least the first series, as they put away the San Francisco Giants, their likely first round foe, yesterday in spite of defeat. It’s going to take a combination of three wins and Washington losses for Cincinnati to have home field advantage throughout, though its opponent is clearly still TBD at this point for that first round series. Mat Latos will get the ball from Manager Dusty Baker on Tuesday for his final appearance of the regular season. Latos will be likely the third starter that Baker calls upon for the postseason, and there’s no shame in that. It has been virtually impossible to beat the righty all year long, as he is 13-4 and has two complete games to his credit. Latos has 181 strikeouts this year in 204.1 innings of work, and he has a sturdy 1.16 WHIP and 3.52 ERA in what has likely amounted to be the best year of his career.

The real story here though, is St. Louis. The Cardinals need a win or a loss by the Los Angeles Dodgers to clinch a spot in the playoffs, where they would be facing the Atlanta Braves at Turner Field on Friday in the first ever Wild Card game in the National League. What might be even more notable is that this is the first time that Chris Carpenter has pitched on the mound here at Busch Stadium since last season’s playoffs. He has two starts under his belt since coming back from elbow problems in the offseason, and though he is 0-1, he has allowed just nine hits and two runs in 11 total innings of work. Carpenter is going to be on a pitch count in all likelihood, as Manager Mike Matheny would really like to make sure that one of his most talented arms is ready to go in the postseason and could even be used in relief if need be in that one game playoff in Atlanta. Carpenter hasn’t shown that he can strike out batters at will anymore, but we are looking at a small sample set.

Prediction

The Cardinals just keep finding ways to win games, and we think that they will find a way to win this one, too. They’ll improbably get into the playoffs yet again on Tuesday night, and will leave the Reds stuck in the No. 2 position going into Game 162. St. Louis 5 – Cincinnati 3
