San Diego Chargers vs. Dallas Cowboys
Point Spread: Cowboys -1
Total Line: 37
The San Diego Chargers and the Dallas Cowboys clash this upcoming Sunday night in a NFL Week 2 preseason matchup between two teams looking to reverse their ill-fortunes from a year ago. Kick-off from Cowboys Stadium is slated for 8 p.m. (ET) and the game will be broadcast nationally on NBC.
San Diego finished the 2010 season with a 9-7 record, but it was not enough to get it into the postseason. With a ‘Super Bowl or bust’ mentality, the Chargers opened the preseason with a 24-17 loss to Seattle as a three-point home favorite last Friday night. The total went ‘over’ the 35-point line.
The good news for San Diego, despite the seven-point loss, was the fact that quarterback Philip Rivers appears to be ready to go after completing five of six passes for 87 yards in his only series of the night. The Chargers actually led 10-0 with the majority of the starters in the game, but were outscored 24-7 in the second half.
Dallas is trying to pick up the pieces from a disappointing 6-10 campaign in 2010 with Jason Garrett at the helm as the new head coach and Rob Ryan as the team’s new defensive coordinator. The results from the first preseason game were mixed as the Cowboys came away with a 24-23 win over Denver as 2.5 home favorites, but their defense hardly looked impressive in doing so. The total in this one also went ‘over’ with the closing line set at 33.5.
Tony Romo was a welcomed sight in the Dallas backfield after missing 10 games last season with a broken collar bone. In limited action, he went 3-for-5 for 33 yards, but just the fact that he is back as the Cowboys’ starting quarterback has to give the entire team renewed hope for much better results in 2011.
Ryan’s defense was victimized for 118 yards on the ground and 238 yards in the air with guys like Tim Tebow and Brady Quinn running the show. With Rivers expected to play most of the first half, it will be interesting how this unit does against the No.1 rated offense in the league from a year ago.
The free NFL pick in this one is San Diego plus the point as Rivers puts enough points on the board in the first half to allow the Chargers to hold on for the win.
