The San Diego State Aztecs are one of the seven teams that were beaten last week by an FCS foe. This time around though, they are taking a major step up in class when they take on the Ohio State Buckeyes at the Horseshoe on the college football betting lines.
There weren’t many teams that were embarrassed more than the Aztecs in Week 1 of the season. Losing to the Eastern Illinois Panthers wasn’t the end of the world, but losing by three touchdowns was completely inexcusable. San Diego State knew that there were going to be a lot of challenges this year, but this season has already become incredibly frustrating. QB Adam Dingwell took over at the end of last season after QB Ryan Katz got hurt. Dingwell actually did relatively well, including going on the road and pulling off the upset of the Boise State Broncos on the Smurf Turf. That said, against an FCS team, he only went 27-of-63 for 318 yards with four picks and no touchdowns. That’s not going to get the job done by any stretch of the imagination. The team had to settle for a slew of field goals against Eastern Illinois, and that’s why it was beaten by three touchdowns. The Aztecs also know that they are going to have to be a heck of a lot better defensively. They allowed over 500 yards to Eastern Illinois, and that really has to improve in this one to have a chance, too.
The Buckeyes came out of the blocks in a hurry against the Buffalo Bulls, scoring three touchdowns in a row in the first quarter. Head Coach Urban Meyer went for two following each of his first two touchdowns to take a 16-0 lead, and it looked like OSU was going to roll to a 70-0 victory. However, from there, the team became a bit complacent. Buffalo was never really in the game at all, but the club was able to stick around and cover against a five-touchdown point spread. The defense did allow 20 points, but the unit only allowed 258 yards, much of which came after the game was out of hand. QB Braxton Miller started off the game on fire, and he ended throwing for 178 yards and two TDs with a pick and 77 yards on the ground. RB Carlos Hyde remains suspended for the first three games of the season, but if RB Jordan Hall plays as well as he did against Buffalo, there won’t be anything to worry about. Hall rushed for 159 yards and two TDs against the Bulls in Week 1.
The Buckeyes are one of the best teams in the land, but they shouldn’t be laying more than four touchdowns in this game. The Aztecs are going to rebound well in this one, and they’ll at least put on a decent show in this one and stick within three touchdowns or so.
