Football Night in America this week features a great showdown on the NFL betting odds, as the New England Patriots take on the San Francisco 49ers in what could be a Super Bowl Sunday preview.
The 49ers are coming off of a win over the Miami Dolphins on Sunday that was a heck of a lot closer than a 27-13 score line suggests. A 50-yard TD run by QB Colin Kaepernick proved to be the score that made all the difference. The club does now have at least 27 points in three of the four games that Kaepernick has started this year, but that doesn’t mean that the offense has been as efficient. The defense has the top sack man in the league in LB Aldon Smith, who is sure to set the record for the most sacks in a single season this year if he doesn’t get caught from behind by DE JJ Watt of the Houston Texans. This unit not only is figuring out how to force turnovers and give the offense as many chances as possible, but it also is scoring points as well. The Niners are averaging beating opponents by 108.8 yards per game over the course of the last four outings with Kaepernick under center.
New England is coming off of its biggest win of the season last week, a 42-14 romp of the Texans to stay in contention for the No. 1 seed in the playoffs. By the time this one kicks off, the Pats will know whether they are controlling their own destiny for the top slot or not, as the Texans are playing against the Indianapolis Colts in a game that could flip control of the AFC South and of the No. 1 overall seed earlier in the day. QB Tom Brady threw another four TD passes, and he now has 29 scores and four picks this year to go with 3,833 yards. WR Wes Welker needs five catches for 100 for the year, and he already has 1,116 yards. TE Aaron Hernandez had two TDs against Houston, and he is taking over as the primary tight end in the offense without TE Rob Gronkowski, who is still out with a broken forearm. RB Stevan Ridley has 1,082 yards and 10 scores on the ground as well.
There is a real question as to how well the Patriots are going to play in this game. We know that the 49ers are going to bring everything that they’ve got to the table, and we wouldn’t be all that surprised if they were able to come on the road and shock the Pats on their home field just a week after taking down Houston.
