Game Overview

The Giants ended the month of June with a 5-2 victory over Colorado as 127 favorites on the road. It was just their second win in their last 10 games and they are now 39-42 overall and three games in back of Arizona in the NL West. San Francisco remains on the road this week where it is just 15-27 overall. The total has stayed UNDER in five of its last six games.

The five runs against the Rockies this past Sunday was only the second time in their last 10 games that the Giants tallied more than three runs. They are currently ranked seventh in the National League in scoring with an average of 4.1 runs a game. Pitching has also been an issue for this team with a staff ERA of 4.02. Mike Kickham is scheduled to get the start in this series opener. The left-hander is 0-2 on the year with a 10.57 ERA.

Cincinnati also hit a rough patch to close-out the month with a 3-7 record in its last 10 games. This past weekend on the road, it lost two of three to Texas after getting swept by Oakland in a three-game series last week. The Reds have fallen 5.5 games in back of Pittsburgh in the NL Central race and are now 46-36 on the year. They return home where they are 26-14. The total has stayed UNDER in five of their last seven games.

The Reds have only managed an average of 2.8 runs a game during this recent slide as compared to a season average of 4.3 runs per game. They continue to be one of the best teams in the league in terms of pitching with a 3.48 team ERA. It will be Bronson Arroyo’s turn in the rotation for Monday night. The right-hander is 6-6 overall with a 3.61 ERA. He got bounced around his last time out and allowed a season-high seven earned runs in less than five innings of work. Lifetime against the Giants he is 3-5 with a 3.13 ERA.

Both of these teams come into this series in desperate need of stringing together some wins, but the edge in Monday night’s opener goes to Cincinnati with Arroyos on the mound. The Reds are 5-1 in his last six home starts and the Giants are just 5-12 in their last 17 road games against a team with a winning record.
