The St. Louis Cardinals have the best record in baseball, but the last two days haven’t been easy for them. A rain delayed game against Kansas City didn’t end until after 4 am EST on Thursday night. The series opener against the Giants last night was postponed because of Tornado Warnings in the area. This contest will be the second game of a day/night doubleheader for these two teams on Saturday night.

Game Overview:

The San Francisco Giants trail the Arizona Diamondbacks by one game in the NL West. The Giants haven’t played their best baseball so far this year, but they also have played terribly. The offense has been better than it was a year ago, but the pitching staff hasn’t been quite as consistent. The fact that the Giants pitching staff ranks 17th in the majors in team ERA has to be disappointing to fans and the coaching staff. Madison Bumgarner actually has the best ERA of any Giants starter this year at 3.12.

The Giants offense has a lot of consistent producers so far this year. Marco Scutaro leads the team with a .330 batting average. Hunter Pence and Buster Posey both enter this game with a .294 batting average. Brandon Belt started the season slowly, but he is starting to show the ability that the team knew he had for quite some time. He could be an important added weapon in the middle of this order. San Francisco is hitting .270 as a team so far this year, which is fourth in the majors.

The St. Louis Cardinals were always expected to have one of the best lineups in baseball. What everyone didn’t see coming was there terrific pitching staff. The Cardinals lead the majors in overall team ERA at 3.09. They have gotten 35 quality starts out of their starting rotation. Remember, this is a rotation that lost Chris Carpenter before the season, and Jaime Garcia is out for the rest of the season with an injury as well. Tyler Lyons, Michael Wacha, and Shelby Miller have all been tremendous for the Cardinals. Adam Wainwright and Jake Westbrook have been the strong veterans leading the rotation. Edward Mujica has been lights out as the team’s new closer.

Offensively, the Cardinals are absolutely loaded. This is probably the best lineup in the National League. Yadier Molina is hitting .353 to lead the team. Allen Craig is batting .312, and he has 37 RBI’s already this year. Matt Carpenter is hitting .310, and his transition over to being an everyday starting second baseman has been tremendous. Carlos Beltran leads the team with 12 homers. Jon Jay and Matt Holliday haven’t quite hit their stride this year, but they’ll be big contributors as well.

Free Pick: Cardinals ML

Adam Wainwright is looking like the Wainwright of old, and this Cardinals lineup is quite a bit better than the Giants lineup. I like the home team here.
