NFL Betting Favorite: Seattle -6
The Seattle Seahawks enter this Thursday night contest at 5-1. Seattle is unbeaten at home, and 2-1 on the road. Arizona is 3-3 on the year, but the Cardinals are 2-0 at home so far this season. Both of these teams look quite a bit better than they did last season. Can Arizona stick around or will Seattle dominate in the desert?
Seattle was a bit sloppy in their home win over Tennessee last weekend, but the Seahawks did end up taking care of business and moving to 5-1. Seattle hasn’t played nearly as well on the road as they have at home. The next step in the maturation process for the Seahawks will be to try to put together a full game on the road. Russell Wilson’s numbers aren’t quite as good as last year’s. Wilson is a very good quarterback, but his completion percentage has dipped to 61% so far this season. Marshawn Lynch leads the team in rushing, and he is averaging 4.2 yards per carry. Seattle is second in the NFL in rushing yards. The Seahawks are averaging 26.2 points per game.
Seattle’s defense is very good. This unit is second in total defense in the NFL. Opponents are putting up only 15.7 points per game on this defense. The secondary is absolutely tremendous. Opposing teams are throwing for only 188.3 yards per game so far this year. Seattle’s defense is often underrated by the experts. The defense is truly the strength of this football team.
Arizona was beaten 32-20 last weekend by the 49ers in San Francisco. Carson Palmer threw two first quarter interceptions, but the Cardinals were able to stick around and make that game interesting. Palmer has given the Cardinals offense a quarterback who can get it downfield, but with 11 interceptions already through six weeks he is really hurting the team with his decision making. Palmer has a quarterback rating of just 69.3 in 2013. Larry Fitzgerald’s numbers are up with Palmer throwing the ball to him. Fitzgerald has 405 yards receiving already this year. Rashard Mendenhall is only averaging 3.3 yards per carry this year. Backup Andre Ellington is starting to get more playing time, and he is averaging 7 yards per carry. Arizona’s offense is scoring 18.2 points per game this season.
The Cardinals defense has been pretty good this year. Most people know about Patrick Peterson and the talented secondary, but Arizona’s front seven is very good. Darnell Dockett and Dan Williams give the team two great run stuffers at the front of the defense. Opponents are rushing for only 90.5 yards per game against this unit. The linebacker unit is getting hit by the injury bug, and it will be interesting to see if some of the backups can step in and produce right away.
Free Pick: Under 40
Arizona was beaten 58-0 the last time these two teams met. The Cardinals will remember that game. Still, I think Seattle has the much better team overall. Look for a low scoring game here as both defenses come to play.
