NBA Betting: Spur at Nets
The San Antonio Spurs could be considered a little worn out after last night’s game, but that’s perfectly fine as far as the Brooklyn Nets are concerned, because they will beat the Spurs any way they can after what they have been through. These teams hook up in NBA betting action on Thursday night at 8:05 PM ET at the Barclays Center.
San Antonio comes into the game as the second-place overall team in the Western Conference, sporting a 35-13 straight-up record (23-25 against the basketball pointspread), while the Nets are 21-25 straight-up and 22-24 against the VietBet NBA odds and hold onto the #7 spot in the Eastern Conference.
Brooklyn has lost 20 of the last 21 meetings with San Antonio, and there wasn’t very much the Nets could do in their favor the last time they played the Spurs. It was an “embarrassing” experience, according to point guard Deron Williams. What happened on that New Year’s Eve night was that the Spurs had one of those outings that allowed coach Gregg Popovich to rest his veterans like Tim Duncan and Tony Parker, as they cruised to a 113-92 win.
On the surface the Nets’ statistics did not look so unimpressive – they shot 44% from the field and made almost all their free throws – but they did not convert on rebounding opportunities, suffering a 53-38 deficit in that regard, and could not get out on the perimeter to stop the Spurs from getting open looks, as San Antonio made nine of its 20 three-point attempts. They covered as a 12-point favorite in the NBA betting lines.
That put the Nets’ record at 10-22, but they managed to change things more than a little bit, going on a run of ten wins in eleven games right after that. Yes, they have lost three of their last four games, but those losses were to Oklahoma City and Indiana, the respective conference leaders, as well as the emerging Toronto Raptors.
As VietBet customers know, this is a team that hasn’t become a contender for an Eastern Conference playoff spot by accident; first-year coach Jason Kidd, who is learning quickly on the job, made the decision to go with a smaller lineup, partially because of the injury that has sidelined All-Star center Brook Lopez for the rest of the season, and it featured the two future Hall of Fame players they got from Boston – Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce – in roles that moved them up; in other words, Garnett became a center and Pierce a power forward. Kidd has All-Star Deron Williams as his point guard but Shaun Livingston, at 6’7″, was an ironic fill-in when Williams suffered his frequent ankle sprains, and Kidd could work on creating various matchup problems for the opposition.
This team, like San Antonio, employs a number of veterans, so it is natural that when Garnett, Pierce, Joe Johnson (recently named to the East All-Star squad) and others can get a rest, it will be a benefit. They have not played since Monday night, when they beat the Philadelphia 76ers by a 108-102 score (a non-cover as nine-point favorites in the basketball betting odds.
The Spurs have been hit with a rash of injury problems, including the loss of Kawhi Leonard, the talented wing man who broke his hand, and now Manu Ginobili, who could be out for up to a month with a bad hamstring. Danny Green is back in the lineup,.and as most NBA bettors are well aware, he has the ability to change a game all by himself with his ability to hit three-point shots. He was rusty coming back against New Orleans, hitting just one of his seven shots, but then scored 21 last night against the Wizards.
The Spurs are a team that could be considered to be spent right now. They had to really extend themselves against Washington on Wednesday night, coming back from 17 points down to win a 122-118 double-overtime decision at the Verizon Center. Parker has tightness in his lower back and is being held out of the game in Brooklyn. Duncan, who had a superb outing, with 31 points and eleven rebounds, played 40 minutes and may not play very much, which will disappoint those VietBet customers who wanted to see him matched up against Garnett. Patty Mills, who had 23 last night, will be counted on heavily in the backcourt. Tiago Splitter is now back in the rotation and that will help up front is Duncan is rested.
