A National League match-up will be featured in Major League Baseball betting action when the St. Louis Cardinals face the Pittsburgh Pirates Sunday night at 8:05 ET at PNC Park on ESPN. This Sunday night game will be the rubber match in a three game series with the Pirates taking the first two contests.

The Cardinals have fallen short in two straight games against the Pirates including a 4-3 loss on Saturday night. They put up three runs in the third inning, but failed to score the rest of the contest. Second baseman Mark Ellis had the only RBI for St. Louis as he singled to score Allen Craig, Ellis would later score on a wild pitch to give his team a 3-0 lead it could not hold onto. Pitcher Lance Lynn got the loss as he fell to 4-2 working 6.0 innings giving up four runs on nine hits. On Sunday right hander Shelby Miller will get the start for the Cards as he comes in with a 3.20 ERA in 39.1 innings and a record of 4-2 thus far. Miller got the win 4-3 over the Atlanta Braves last week going 5.0 innings allowing just two runs on six hits. St. Louis has struggled to score runs this season averaging just 3.62 runs per game. Thanks to that lack of offense the ‘under’ is 13-5-2 in the Cardinals L/20 road games.

The Pirates got the win by scoring all of their runs in the fourth inning to setup a chance to sweep the Cardinals in Sunday’s game. Third basemen Pedro Alvarez had what proved to be the game-winning RBI single that scored Josh Harrison. Pittsburgh used six pitchers including Jared Hughes who threw just 1.1 innings in the contest, but got the win to improve to 2-1 on the year. Center fielder Andrew McCutchen missed Saturday’s game with a sore ankle and is questionable to play in this one. Right hander Charlie Morton will be on the hill for the Bucs as he comes in with a 0-4 record having made seven starts and he has thrown 44.1 innings notching a 3.45 ERA. Morton was very respectable in his last start throwing 8.0 innings and he gave up one run on three hits. Pittsburgh has struggled at times offensively and it is scoring 4.00 runs per game with a .245 team batting average. It will certainly need to get some runs off Miller in this one to help Morton grab his first win of the season.

The Cardinals are trying to avoid being swept for the first time this season and they are slight ‘underdogs’ in this one. However, the Pirates are 0-8 in Morton’s L/8 starts against the Cards and we believe that streak may continue especially if McCutchen can’t play for the home team. We like St. Louis to avoid the sweep and get the job done with a solid outing from Miller and just enough offense to get out of the Steel City with a win.
