Sunday Night Baseball Picks: Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets Pick 6/5/11

ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball betting action provides us with a doozy this weekend, and here at Bang the Book, we have all of our Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets picks for the biggest showcase of the weekend.

The Braves have already split the first two games of this series at Citi Field and have now won 10 of the last 13 games against the Mets. Atlanta’s offense really hasn’t been all the great of late. The team is still averaging 3.83 runs per game this year, No. 23 in the league, and the squad was just shut out yesterday without really any sort of offense whatsoever. There aren’t many pitchers in baseball that have had less run support of late like Tim Hudson, the man that is going to be on the mound on Sunday night. The righty has only gotten five runs of support over the course of his last three games, and as a result, he is lucky to have led the Braves to even one win in that stretch. For the year, Hudson has some fantastic splits. He has a 3.75 ERA and a 1.10 WHIP thanks to the fact that he has only issued 18 walks in 72 innings of work. Batters are also hitting only .228 against him. The problem is that he is only 4-4 on the season.

When you consider the fact that the Mets were supposed to be one of the worst teams in baseball this year, going 27-31 in their first 58 games isn’t all that bad. However, we really should dig a little deeper into that. New York is -$237 this year on the MLB odds as a team. The problem is that Dillon Gee, the man that was on the mound yesterday, is 8-0 and +$876. The rest of the team is just 19-31, -$1,113. That’s bad news for RA Dickey, who is going to be on the bump on Sunday. Dickey has only led the Mets to one win over the course of his last six starts, and he is just 2-6 on the campaign. The knuckleballer is getting torched to the tune of a .289 batting average against, and he just isn’t getting strikeouts. 45 in 67.2 innings of work for a starter just isn’t good enough at this level. Last year, the righty had a 2.84 ERA. This year, he has a 4.39 ERA. Dickey has also been terrible against the Braves in his career, going 0-2 with a 5.56 ERA in 22.2 innings of work, which includes three starts and three relief appearances.

Atlanta Braves vs. New York Mets Pick: This is a bit of a tossup game right now, but we know that Hudson is just in a heck of a lot better shape and has a lot better career against the Mets than Dickey has against Atlanta. Even though we are backing a short favorite on the road for a team that is 15-14 on the campaign, we still trust the Braves -125.
