NCAA Basketball Pick – February 25th
Two of the four teams that have a realistic chance of winning the Big East title are going to meet in college basketball betting action on Big Monday, as the Marquette Golden Eagles host the Syracuse Orange.
The Orange have to get up off the mat and quickly if they are going to have a shot to be a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament this year. It isn’t likely to happen, but winning the regular season Big East title would go a long way towards at least making the seemingly impossible a potential happening. The team was totally stymied against the Georgetown Hoyas on Saturday, converting on just 17 field goals in a 57-46 loss. The Hoyas had their way on both ends of the court, making the game an ugly one with a limited number of possessions. Now, the ‘Cuse have the same sort of problem that they have had for quite some time, as you have to go back over a month to find the last win against one of the truly big time teams out of the Big East. This would classify as a big time victory, if the Orange could get it.
Marquette is coming off of a bad loss at the Villanova Wildcats this past weekend as well. The 60-56 defeat wasn’t the end of the world by any stretch of the imagination, but it did take the Golden Eagles out of first place. To pick Syracuse’s 2-3 zone apart, someone is going to have to figure out how to stretch things from the outside. F Otto Porter was able to do that for Georgetown, as he knocked down five of his 10 three-point field goal attempts. Unfortunately for the Golden Eagles, they rank 312th in the country, knocking down just 30.0 percent of their three-point attempts. F Jamil Wilson is the most likely man to catch some fire from the outside, as he has hit 41.1 percent of his three pointers this year. No one else on the team has converted on more than a third of their outside shots. Wilson had a streak of five straight games with at least 10 points snapped against Villanova when he put up just four points in 19 minutes.
This just isn’t a good matchup for Marquette. We aren’t a real believer in either of these teams right now, but if no one is going to be able to step up and knock down some triples, the Golden Eagles are going to be in a lot of trouble. Expect a low scoring outing where the visitors come out on top. Syracuse 63 – Marquette 57
