Chicago came into this season’s Stanley Cup Playoffs as a heavy favorite to win the Western Conference. After eliminating Minnesota in five games in the opening round followed by a dominating 4-1 victory in Game 1 of this series as a 191 home favorite, it appeared that it was well on its way fulfilling that prediction. That may have all changed after Saturday night’s 4-1 loss in Game 2 as a 196 favorite at home.
Portland’s rapidly fading hopes to make the playoffs in the Western Conference took another hit on Tuesday night with a 102-95 loss to Milwaukee as a 5.5-point road underdog. This followed a 101-100 defeat at the hands of lowly Philadelphia as a one-point underdog on the road this past Monday.
Dallas continues to battle to stay in the playoff race in the Western Conference with a four-game winning streak that has it three games in back of the Lakers for the eighth and final spot. The impressive part of this current run is that the last three wins came on the road where the Mavericks are just 13-21 straight-up this season. They are 30-33 SU overall but a profitable 37-26 against the spread.
Miami remained hot off the All-Star break with a 103-90 victory over Atlanta on Wednesday night as a 5.5-point favorite on the road. It was its eighth win in a row with the last two coming on the road. The Heat are now 37-14 straight-up on the year and 14-11 on the road. They have covered in their last five games to improve to 27-24 against the spread.
The Chicago Cubs and New York Mets open up a quick two game set on Monday in Chicago with Carlos Zambrano facing John Maine. Zambrano is 2-1 on the season with an ERA of 3.04 and is coming off a nice outing on Wednesday against Cincinnati when he allowed only two runs in seven innings. The Cubs are playing well having swept Pittsburgh over the weekend.
