How will the Louisville Cardinals respond to being on the losing end of a five-overtime game at Notre Dame Saturday night? That game was an instant classic, and it always hurts bad to be on the losing end of that type of game, but those of you who watched the game know that Louisville had every chance to win that game. The Cardinals have lost four of their last seven games. St. John’s is 7-5 in the conference, so they are only half a game behind Louisville in the Big East standings.
The Big East already looks a little different than it used to, and it is going to look a whole lot different in a year or two. For the time being though, there are still some very good matchups. Syracuse already beat Louisville on the road, and the Orange will be looking to take down Connecticut on the road on Wednesday night in front of a national television audience on ESPN.
The Kentucky Wildcats are back in the top 25 after a strong recent stretch, but they are still looking for that huge win to give them some major momentum. Florida was on pace to be the new number one in the country until they were smoked by Arkansas last week. Can the Gators get back on track with a big win or will Kentucky’s youngsters come of age in this SEC showdown?
Can the Indiana Hoosiers stay at the top of the college basketball rankings for more than a week? Every top team of late has been losing in their first week at the top, and the Hoosiers will get a couple tests on the road in Big Ten play this week. Indiana must travel to Ohio State on Sunday, but they can’t overlook the Fighting Illini. Illinois has been struggling of late, but winning in Champaign has been tough for the last few years.
The Florida Gators are starting to turn some heads with their dominance of the SEC. The Gators are up to second in the college basketball rankings, and they are getting quite a few votes for the number one spot. No one in the SEC has even been much of a challenge for the Gators, but Arkansas will look to change that on Tuesday night. Let’s take a look at this SEC matchup.
The Wisconsin Badgers and Ohio State Buckeyes are tied at 5-2 in the Big Ten standings. Both of these teams have been very up and down so far this year. Michigan and Indiana are going to be tough to catch at the top of the Big Ten, so these teams know they can’t afford many more losses. Recent matchups between these two have been very hard fought games, and I expect nothing different in this one.
The Duke Blue Devils and Davidson Wildcats will meet in a last minute non-conference matchup at Charlotte on Wednesday night. Both of these teams will start conference play in the next few days, but this should be one more nice tune up. This one will take place at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte. Can Duke keep their top spot in the college basketball rankings
First year Coach John Groce has the Illinois Fighting Illini off to a 9-0 start. Mark Few and the Gonzaga Bulldogs are also 9-0. The Fighting Illini are ranked 14th in the nation and Gonzaga is 10th in the nation. Groce did a great job with the Ohio Bobcats last year, and he is off to a great start with Illinois. Gonzaga has a great home court advantage and this should be a huge game between two unbeaten teams.
With the Big Ten/ACC Challenge out of the way, now the Big East and the ACC take center stage. Marquette and Florida met last year in the Sweet Sixteen, and the Gators came out with a 68-58 victory. Both teams have quite a few new faces, but both are expected to be high quality teams. Let’s take a look at this big early season matchup.
