The North Carolina Tar Heels are off to their best start since 1997 and back in the Top 25 for the first time since 2001. To stay in the rankings they will have to defeat a Notre Dame team that is 4-1. “Our kids are doing a great job of keeping things in perspective,” North Carolina coach Butch Davis said.
Two teams looking to move above the .500 mark will meet Friday as Memphis hosts Louisville in a nationally televised game on ESPN. The Cardinals enter the game at 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the Big East after losing to Connecticut almost two weeks ago by a score of 26-21. Memphis has won three straight games after losing their first three of the season. Last week they defeated UAB 33-30.
The Clemson Tigers were thought of as possible National title contenders before the season began but entering Thursday’s game at Wake Forest they are just trying to stay above .500. Year after year it seems that everyone anoints Clemson as the favorite in the ACC and a team that could make a splash in the National title race, yet every year they disappoint. This year could be the biggest disappointment yet. The Tigers have already lost twice this season and if they lose on Thursday at Wake Forest, they could see their season slip away.
The season is already on the line for Florida Atlantic as they host Troy on Tuesday night. The Owls are 1-4 but still in the Sun Belt Conference race if they can get a win against the Trojans. “This of course is a very important game for us, as they all were last year in our run towards the championship of the Sun Belt conference.” Florida Atlantic head coach Howard Schnellenberger said, “We’re in a playoff situation against Troy. In all likelihood, the Sun Belt champion will have them all.
Revenge will be on the mind of ninth-ranked USC on Saturday as they host #23 Oregon. The Trojans rarely lose any games but they were beaten last year by the Ducks 27-21 and they are coming off a loss to the other Oregon team, the Beavers that knocked them from #1 in the polls. With the volatility in college football it still could be possible that the Trojans could move up the rankings and regain that spot before the year is out, but not if they lose on Saturday.
Fourth-ranked Missouri will try and avoid the upset bug that has bitten many teams in the Top 10 this season as they travel to Nebraska on Saturday. The Tigers are solid favorites to win the game but history could be against them. They have not won at Nebraska in 30 years but with quarterback Chase Daniel and a high-powered offense they have a good chance to end the drought on Saturday.
The Boise State Broncos take the national spotlight on Wednesday as they host Louisiana Tech on ESPN. The Broncos are ranked 17th in the country and have won their last 45 regular season home games. That streak is likely to continue as they host Louisiana Tech.
Two teams trying to make a mark in the Sun Belt Conference take the field on Tuesday night as Middle Tennessee State hosts Florida Atlantic. Both teams really need a win and that should make for a very good game. “Middle Tennessee has the same record we have. They’ve defeated a major Division I team, in Maryland. We’ve beaten what for us is a major Division I team in UAB. And we haven’t won any of the rest and they haven’t won any of the rest.”
The unbeaten and 12th ranked Penn State Nittany Lions finally face a test this Saturday night as they host 22nd ranked Illinois in a nationally televised game on ABC. The Nittany Lions have been impressive so far this season but haven’t played anyone. They should find out something this week as Illinois and quarterback Juice Williams come to town. Williams has the potential to make big plays but he also makes mistakes.
