The battle of New York is a lot more interesting this preseason than in the past simply for the fact that Brett Favre is now leading the Jets. Usually the starters play into the third quarter in the third preseason game but may not be the case in this matchup as Favre is still learning the offense and the Jets have three backup quarterbacks they are looking at. Kellen Clemens was expected to be the backup but rookie Brett Ratliff has been excellent this preseason and could pry the backup job away from Clemens. The Jets are also considering keeping rookie Erik Ainge.
The real Dallas Cowboys may finally make more than a token appearance on Friday night when they host the Houston Texans. The Cowboys haven’t played their starters much in the first two preseason games and lost to San Diego and to Denver. The starters will get a lot more action on Friday and the Cowboys are favored to get their first preseason win of the year.
The New England Patriots have looked nothing like the team that went undefeated during the 2007 regular season so far this preseason. The Patriots have been without quarterback Tom Brady and he is questionable for this game on Friday. Normally the third game of the preseason is a dress rehearsal for the regular season but the Patriots may not treat the game as such. Philadelphia will be looking at the game as a big test though. Quarterback Donovan McNabb and the Eagles will look to play far better than they did last week against Carolina.
The Chicago Bears will start Kyle Orton at quarterback this season and his first test as the main man comes in Thursday’s preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers. Orton won the job over Rex Grossman, although neither player was overwhelming in their play this preseason. Orton is 12-6 as a starting quarterback for the Bears in his three seasons.
The New York Giants play a home game for the first time since last December as they host the Cleveland Browns in preseason action on Monday night. The Giants won all of their playoff games last season on the road and played at Detroit last week in their preseason opener. The Giants looked rusty last week against the Lions, losing 13-10.
The New England Patriots will play their second preseason game of the year on Sunday night in Tampa Bay and they will look to play much better than they did a week ago in their home loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Quarterback Tom Brady was held out last week and his backups were awful in the loss. Brady should see his first action of the season on Sunday. Reports have him playing at least the first quarter against the Bucs.
The Detroit Lions and Cincinnati Bengals are known more for throwing the ball than running it. Both teams are trying to change that image and will get another chance to do so as they meet in Cincinnati on Sunday in Week 2 preseason action. The Lions won last week in Week 1 preseason play against the New York Giants 13-10 while the Bengals upset the Green Bay Packers 20-17.
The Dallas Cowboys and Denver Broncos will each look for their first win of the preseason as they meet on Saturday night in Denver. The Cowboys started well last week against the Chargers but the backups did not play well and Dallas lost 31-17. Starting quarterback Tony Romo was 3-3 in his short time. Backup quarterback Brad Johnson was 8-15 but threw an interception that led to a San Diego touchdown. Dallas did get good play out of rookie running backs Felix Jones and Tashard Choice.
The focus on Saturday night in preseason action will be in New York as Brett Favre makes his debut for the Jets. There is so much interest in the game that the NFL Network changed their broadcast schedule and will now show this game on Saturday night. “All eyes will be on him, and rightly so,” Washington head coach Jim Zorn said. “He’s a tremendous athlete and this is his 18th season.
The Tennessee Titans host the Oakland Raiders in a preseason game on Friday that will be broadcast on FOX television. This will be the 10th time the Raiders and Titans have met in the preseason with the Raiders holding the 5-4 edge. The teams have met a lot in the regular season with the Raiders holding a 23-18 advantage over the Titans.
