Oregon State has been one of the biggest surprises of the season thus far. The Beavers are 7-1 and ranked 11th in the nation. Mike Riley’s team will have a tough test this weekend as they travel to take on the Stanford Cardinal. Stanford is 5-0 at home this year, and the Cardinal are ranked 14th in the country.
Arkansas expected to be in the national title picture this year, but everything went wrong in the offseason and that has continued right through the season. John L. Smith has become one of the least popular men in Arkansas, and the team is now 4-5. South Carolina has fallen on some hard times of late, but they are still 7-2 and ranked eighth in the nation. Steve Spurrier’s team looks to pick up another win this Saturday.
It’s a battle of the state of Texas Saturday afternoon in Lubbock as the Longhorns take on the Red Raiders. Both teams have improved quite a bit in the past couple years, and they come in with an identical 6-2 record. Texas snuck out of Kansas with a win last week, while the Red Raiders were blasted by Kansas State in Manhattan. The Red Raiders are favored by more than a touchdown here.
The Mississippi Rebels are well on their way to turning the program around after a dismal 2-10 season last year. Hugh Freeze was a great hire by the program, and he has this team playing much better football already. Georgia picked up a huge win last week over the Florida Gators in Jacksonville. The Texas A&M Aggies have made the tough move to the SEC, and they are finding quite a bit of success thus far. First-year coach Kevin Sumlin has this team playing a new style of football, and it has led the team to a 6-2 record and a spot in the top 25. Mississippi State is 7-1 on the year, with their only loss coming last week to Alabama. The Bulldogs were dominated by the Crimson Tide, but everyone has been so far this year. This is a key SEC matchup for both teams.
Michigan and Nebraska both come into this game at 5-2 on the year. The big difference though is that Michigan is unbeaten in the Big Ten, while Nebraska has already dropped a game in the conference. These two teams have the inside track at the top of the Big Ten Legends Division. Nebraska will have a big home field advantage here at night. These two proud institutions are both ineligible for postseason play this year. Still, both teams have been playing some very good football so far this season. It’s hard to argue against him, since he gets so much out of his talent at Kansas State. The Wildcats are all the way up to number five in the rankings, but they’ll face a very dangerous Iowa State team in Ames this weekend. This game isn’t getting the same publicity as some others this weekend, but it has major national implications.
